Allens Camera in Levittown PA: Question

I've never had to return anything to them but I'm sure they are reasonable. Give 'em a call, let them know your plans and they'll tell you exactly what to expect. They are very down to earth people, and heck, it never hurts to have a slightly more extended relationship with a guy at a camera shop. ;-)

Hey guys. I'm going to be in the Philadelphia area next week, and I
was thinking about picking up a lens.

Anyone know their return policy as regards to exchanges and refunds?

... that returns must be accompanied by the recipt within 10 days, I can tell you that the last thing I purchased there was a used 70-200 f/4L, and was given 30 days to check it out by Rich.

Incidentally, Allen's Camera is one of the best there is. Their prices are great and their service is fantastic.

Have fun!

Kind Regards,
Brian

Yes, but were you allowed a refund? Restocking fees on new items?

Hi Duncan,
Yes, but were you allowed a refund? Restocking fees on new items?
Yes, I was allowed 30 days to test the lens, and could return it within that time for a refund. No restocking fees that I am aware of, but then again, I've never actually returned anything from Allens. I'm the kind of person who researches purchases to death before I buy, so the only time I ever have to return anything is if its defective. Otherwise, it's exactly what I want.

Incidentally- I never pay restocking fees, even on those rare occasions where I have had to return an item at a place that charges them. Restocking fees exist primarily to discourage people from abusing return policies, but they are not set it stone, and can always be waived in those situations where the reason for return was legitimate.

Kind Regards,
Brian

Hi Duncan,

Hmmm. How? What?
It's easy, actually. Politely but firmly state that there is no way that you are going to pay money because you've had to return some defective product or product that did not meet your needs despite claims by the company/advertising/manager to the contrary. You've already incurred costs (lost time and convenience, for example) and there is no reason you should have to pay the company anything. If the product is in fact defective, additionally remind them that there is no way such a decent company would put this defective "X" back in the stock system for sale, anyway, and perhaps they company should be paying you for having to do their quality testing. If the product just didn't suit your needs after legitimately giving it a shot, jokingly tell them that you'll scan the item back in and put it on the shelf yourself rather than pay a fee.

Handling returns are a normal cost of doing business in retail.

Having said all that, I don't return things often, and when I do, it's almost always becasue the product was defective. I wouldn't deliberately abuse return policies this way. (For example, I know a guy who works for a large electronics retailer who tells me that the number of people who try to buy vidio cameras on a Friday for some weekend event and then return them on Monday after they've got the video is astounding. I am not endorsing such practices.)

Also, I am describing experiences here in the US. Other countries will likely differ on how firmly set any restocking fees are.

Kind Regards,
Brian

--Allen's is the most reputable dealer I have come across "ever"!!! I have returned equipment after having it for about a week.......and no problem, no restocking fees or the like. I only talk with Allen (owner) or Rob and either are helpful, patient and will work to insure you are completely satisfied. I refer a lot of my friends (over at dphoto.us) and everyone has been satisfied with service and prices. I recently bought a 1DsMII and it was $500 less than B&H.........great prices on trade-ins.

Tell Allen I said "hello"

I agree with Bob!

Allen's is very reputable, his prices are superb, and the staff is fabulous! I've bought all my gear there for the past 6 years or so: cameras, lenses, even printer supplies. The prices are great, for a small store, they have a lot of gear in stock, and they are very forthcoming when it comes to Q and A! Allen, Rob, Tony and the others will all be glad to help!
