Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 mk1 service manual

...you might try putting the lens in manual focus and working the
ring back and forth over and over again until you get to go through
the whole range. I fell off my bike and landed on the camera and
lens (50 1.8 mk 1) on concrete. The fall was so hard I had to get
pain killers, very badly bruised my ribs. The lens is fine now. For
a while it was a little stiff.
It doesnt move at all through its range :( If I am lucky I can get it to move very slightly by getting the camera to try and autofocus and then switching to manual focus, so I figure something is bent. Thanks for the advice though - it might be useful in future.

Now all I need is an evening to sit in with my favourite set of watchmakers screwdrivers :o

Sorry, cant find a pdf for 17-40...

Thanks for your offer!
It would be nice if you could rehost some of the files.
The pdf for the 50mm lens has been downloaded 1743 times :-)
Thats almost 600mb!

Have a nice day

You're web-site is probably getting killed, right? This is a great
thing you are doing.

I'll temporarily rehost the ones I have (10D and 20D) and would
like the ones for the rest of my lenses:

35/2, 50/1.4, 100/2, 17-40L, 28-135IS, 75-300IS. I'll rehost these
too (temporarily) to try to help your web-site out if you would
like.

P.S. For some reason, I can't seem to host the 10D and 20D manuals. The error message is "the PDF file is in a format that cannot be read". ?????

Great site!

Does anyone know if there is a service manual for this lens online
anywhere? I can find the one for the mark2 but the two lenses seem
somewhat different in construction.

I managed to drop my mk1 onto a hard surface from a height of about
5 inches and the focusing mechanism is jammed. Maybe the mk2 is
just as robust as the mk1 after all ;)

Hi, Does anybody know where I can get hold of the service manual for the EF 50 1.8 Mk I?

All the old links seem to be dead ends.

I need to dismantle the lens to clean sand out of the helicoid gears and the helicoid grooves.

Thanks.

In the absence of a service manual here's what I did:

I took the lens to pieces. It's very well made. The metal helicoid is mounted on
ball bearings.

Firstly you remove the front decorator ring by undoing the tiny grubscrew and
then turning it anti-clockwise to disconnect the bayonet fitting.

You then remove the focus scale window ring and manual focus ring.
Remove the metal mount at the back.

Unsolder the connections to the focus motor, iris, and AF/MF.
Unscrew the iris flex support bracket.

Remove the two screws at the ends of the arc form drive assembly and ease it
out. You have to be careful of the AF/MF switch tongue.

Remove the large screw near the anti-clockwise end of the AFD, and the lens
group can be extracted towards the front of the lens by rotating the helicoid.

After cleaning up the gears and reassembling, it focused smoothly and freely.

Unfortunately the autofocus hunted badly before locking on. I turned the preset
pot on the electronic flex through 3/8 turn clockwise and it behaved perfectly.

A very interesting and satisfying exercise.

I hope this is of use to someone else.

Hej Magnus

I have an old Canon EF 50mm 1.8 objective but suddenly the autofocus does not work any more.

The focus is going back and forth all the time and does not stop. Therefore I ask whether you can send me the service manual for this objective. (I tried already the megaupload and the filedropper address but was not successful.)

Tack så mycket på förhand (sorry my swedish is very bad!)
