Hi Mironv. This is my first post on dpreview.
I find your comment harsh because it doesn't explain why you think they suck.
Actually, first one and last one remind me of some pictures Martin Parr took.
Of course if you're fond of ansel adams and doisneau you won't like them.

Regards.

Hey, French C. thanks for posting.

I hope you have a great time with your new camera. It's the bargain of the decade.

You'll get little recognition around here unless you have razor sharp shots of feline dander or avian hemorrhoids or similar subjects.
It's nice to see you being gratifyingly creative even if you catch some grief.
Keep it up.

The possession of good judgment is engendered by experience.
The best experience is the fortuitous aftermath of bad judgment.

Ok....here are my comments.

I wouldnt really lable these keepers.

1. Subject isnt really that interesting, and its under exposed....and the white balance seems off. Use of frame space by putting the content dead center is usually a no no.

2. Actually kind of interesting...still a little under exposed, and the white balance again is off a bit...but not as bad as the first one.....of the group...this one has the most potential....could actually be used to represent how people buzz past religion or god these days.

3. This one also has a bit of interest...not sure its interesting enough to hold a persons intterest, but use of frame space is a little more interesting....and the almost sepia quality works.

4. White balance is horrably off.....and its not really that interesting....its just a meat counter...no form..etc.

Hope you dont take my feedback too harshly......we all grow through experiencing what dosnt work.

i like the first three a lot. the shot of the meat bin doesn't do much for me but the others are provoking. they're off the beaten road and show some risk in the taking, certainly in the posting.

i just want to check in again and echo what vernix has already said. it's so refreshing to see something different and creative. your first day with it and to me you've shown more creativiity than a thousand past posts. allow the posters to pick all they want, white balance off, composition did not follow the rule of thirds, colors muted, yadda yadda yadda. i say keep posting.

No one said "dont post"....I for one look forward to his next effort.

He just asked for comments....I gave them.....

We ALL have been in learning mode.....and if your a REALLY GOOD photographer......you STILL are. : )

We learn from what works...and what dosnt.....

I like them a lot, except perhaps for the last image.

It's nice to see a good creative eye with a modern vision.

Unfortunately, you are in for a hard time here with technogeeks and people who measure everything in terms of technical perfection rather than creative aspects.

I doubt if they have ever heard of Jurgen Teller or Wolfgang Tillmans, or in fact if their photographic reading goes beyond technical how-to books. The funny thing is that they will learn more from looking at books on contemporary photography than from any of the how to books they have.

This is really the kind of place where you either praise or ***** about your camera or that of the so-called "opposition" and little else.

I wouldn't be too worried about the reaction you get here, it doesn't count for much.

If I were you I'd find a more creative art forum for your postings and use this forum for technical issues if you have any.

I really hope that some of the reactions here have not hurt your feelings; the standard of photography here is in inverse proportion to the cost of the equipment many people have.

I agree with Roman in principal. Of the 4, number 2 is the most striking, and IMHO, a keeper. It's an interesting photo all around.

I did notice the exposure and WB, but to my eye, the yuck factor is the lens defects / distortion. My advice is if you're after the LF look, take some time to correct for lens defects with PanoTools or PTMac. It makes a difference to a critical eye. Watch your horizontal lines when composing.

Kudos, however, for not taking pictures of birds, your Audi or children. You have talent, keep pushing that shutter.

I find these interesting, and really like the first one, with the static and centered composition, with the mailboxes fitting the frame so nicely. I think the space around the boxes is just right, and the pieces of mail and magazines sticking out add the necessary life/interest. I like the slightly green WB too, as it adds to the industrial look.

The second one is also nice. Love the muted colors and the composition, both with spaces and colors, as well as the juxtaposition with the car and the cross.

I like the idea in #3, I like the lines and forms, and the repeat of the two magazines, but I'm not sure if I think it works as well as, say, #1. I like it, but maybe a slightly different framing/composition (closer/further away) would've helped? I don't know, I can't explain - it's just that I like it, but at the same time there's something that doesn't quite come together. (Did that make sense at all, lol?)

I like the idea of #4 too, and it has a little Martin Parr to it. The "sick" WB fits the image just fine, but I just feel the image lacks a point of interest, or that the pieces of meat don't quite come together in a pattern, the eye doesn't have anywhere to rest. I also think the distorted line at the bottom is a little disturbing to a shot with a strict composition like this (what lens did you use?). I still like it, but this one also has "something" lacking to make it really good, IMO.

The first one is definitely a keeper in my eyes, and the second is great. The last two are very interesting, and inspirering. Thanks for sharing!

Oh, and congrats on your new cam! :-)

Thomas.

Although I'm not crazy about these particular shots, I completely agree with the above. Photography isn't primarily about sharpness, noise, megapixels and white balance -- it's about expressing yourself. Keep shooting and posting!

not sure if I like them yet. Would have to look again and again to see if I still found them interesting. What I like is someone trying to find a different perspective. Congrats for that; keep it up.

Hi Thomas!

We already chatted about the sigma 15-30 together, did we? (a few months ago I guess)
Anyway, thanks for the constructive (and kind) comments.

The first one is directly inspired by martin parr, and (as you found out) the last one too.

I ordered a refurbished D2H that came along with an 18-70 DX zoom so it is the lens I used for these shots.

In deed, the distortion is painfull at 18mm as you noticed especially on the last pic, and I'll give PTlens a try.

I don't know if I have to say that WB was intentionaly set to achieve these results, just to prevent the "D2H autoWB sucks, look at FrencConnection's pics!" syndroma.

You almost read my mind for the first pic: I said to myself (what a wonderful worlds... err sorry) the same thing about the "frame", the "magazines" ad the WB.

Thomas, I wish you the best and hope to read you soon.

I really like 1 and 3, far enough off the norm to make me look again, the last one does nothing for me, maybe a tighter frame of the meat - I dont know. No 2 is fine, but more mainstream than 1 & 3

Keep it up and post loads more. I have just ordered a D2H, and have started to clear out my WEB space, so hopfully start to post soon myself.

Well, I'm pretty sure we chatted somewhere here on the forum a couple of months ago, 'cause your name had a positive feel to it :-)

Maybe it was on the Sigma 15-30 and the Sigma 12-24? I ended up selling my Sigma 12-24 and buying a Nikon 20mm 2.8, Nikon 50mm 1.4 and the 60mm 2.8 micro. Haven't tested them much yet, but I think I'll be very happy with these!
Anyway, thanks for the constructive (and kind) comments.

Hehe, nice!

I also find this whole thread very interesting because of the very different responses you've gotten! To me, that must mean your images are worth an extra look, when people go from not liking them much at all to people, like me, who find them interesting and like them very much. It makes for a much more intriguing read than the wow's at a bird shot, IMO :-)
Thomas, I wish you the best and hope to read you soon.
Well, they're not my threads (although I participated), but they're just interesting threads on photography and composition, and why we shoot the things we do (quasi-philosphical :-)).

Thomas.
