OK you win, I finally gave in to shooting with RAW (large pics)

Why bother with RAW when your Jpegs look so good? :o)

I am with you, though. There is no one perfect way of doing
things. You've just got to keep the balance between getting great
images and keeping the fun in photography.
I was experimenting with Picasa and raw today. I dropped a couple of Canon raw files in it and it was just like using jpegs. It did a pretty good conversion on the fly. If it were that easy I would shoot raw, use the picasa conversions where the jpegs looked ok and only fiddle with the raw file if it really needed it.

The only problem is that Picasa doesn't support 7D raw images :( At least not yet.

Starting now for tricky lighting and indoors I will shoot only with
RAW. For outdoor pics, I will stick with jpeg.
Great detail in these shots, José! We're slowly wearing you down ;-)
Wait until you see the highlights you've been missing on your outdoor shots!

Yes I got the ACR with PS-CS and also just bought the Bruce Fraser's book. There's so much to learn. I like your tip of RAW+jpeg because the ability to zoom is very important to me when I check for focus.

Cheers,

I also agree with the suggestion of shooting RAW + JPEG if you have
enough storage space. The JPEG is great for zooming on the spot
with your camera if you want to do that, then you have more
workflow options for processing later on.

No critique, your pictures are excellent, but thought I would
mention this some time back when you mentioned ExpoDisc:

http://www.luminous-landscape.com/tutorials/expose-right.shtml

Quote from the bottom of the article:

"Because of this difference, setting up the exposure using an 18%
gray card (as is typically done with film) does not work so well
with a digital camera. You will get better results if you set your
exposure such that the whitest white in the scene comes close to,
but not quite reaching, the full digital scale (255 for 8-bit
capture, 65535 for 16-bit capture). Base the exposure on the
highlight for a digital camera, and a mid-tone (e.g. 18% gray card)
for a film camera."

I also find this article interesting:

Keep up your good work :-)

Great images, as before -- been meaning to head down there myself
when the light is right.

I think you'll find yourself shooting more and more in Camera Raw
-- and even regretting not having the flexibility to go back and
adjust previous shots... Full control over WB (even to creative
ends) is one tool that is invaluable. Overall, ACR does not so
much add another step in your PS worksflow, as make the process
both more effcient and more enjoyable.

The Fraser book, as mentioned, is a great help in getting started,

I agree 100% with John. I also bought the book and if you only get
one bit of information that helps your workflow it is worth the $.
I always capture Raw + Jpeg now and I have never used the jpeg. I
think processing with Raw brings you closer to the optimum point
faster so you end up with a better picture faster. I typically
only add sharpening after I come out of ACR. I love its CA
correction capabilities and its Luminance noise reduction.

Picts look great as usual.

Needless to say, I need more memory. When I shot with film I think my keepers are 2 out of 36 shots. So when I use the 7D and if I shoot RAW + Jpeg, I can only shoot about 160 shots for 2GB CF card. Well, it won't cut it if I spend minimum of 6 hours a day for three days in August for the US Open tuneup. Now I have an excuse to buy the iPOD Photo :-)

my wife doesn't have the same logic we have. Fortunately we have a small photo business and it makes enough to pay for the toys. Last year I bought the AV320 Multimedia player. It has a 20 Gig hard drive. I went on vacation and loaded up 11 DVD's, 3Gig of music and still had 10 Gig of space left for pictures. So now that I have the 7D I will only load 5 DVD's on the drive. :-O

I use GordianKnot to rip the DVD's to my hard drive and reduce the size down.

Jose -if you are referring to using an ipod as a "in the field" storage device you may want to consider an X-drive or something like it instead. I have an ipod and expected to use the belkin CF card adapter to download pics from my 7D. Upon further investigation turns out the belkin adapter is very very slow and consumes considerable battery power. I have used a 20gig x-drive for the last 3 years with no problems and I know their are many better models now on the market.

I regularly make large 24X30 images from images shot in both RAW and JPG and both have worked fine for me (with interpolation) and grace the walls of the studio along with my medium format shots and people have trouble guessing which is made from which. They (even my fellow photographers) can't tell which image started as a RAW and which started as a JPG. Their guesses are often wrong.

To get great results with JPG, you have got to be very close with proper WB and exposure. Otherwise you get suboptimal results. You have a bit more flexibility and fine tuning control with RAW and that is its real advantage.
