A good friend of mine has a SD300, and he's very happy with it. No cracked LCD, sharp pictures, fast startup and the like. He says that it's not very good for landscape/distance photography, but an ultra-compact can't be expected to do that, really.

It seems best for indoor and relative low-light work, which is something that other Canon compacts don't seem too good for. At least, my S45 has a lot of trouble focusing in low light, even with AF Assist lamp, and the S70, although much better, still doesn't seem to focus as well as the SD300 in lower light situations.

I own a Sd300 and I love it. No soft corners, no cracked LCD, sharp pictures. Only down side is the PF in "extreme" background, which seems to perform worse than other cams in the range. I agree that the Sd300 performs much better in low light/indoor situations than i expected.
So i guess i am a happy Sd300 owner

I'm another very happy SD300 owner.

I got it a month or so ago as a "carry anywhere" alternative to my EOS 300D + lenses. I am somewhat ashamed to say that I haven't taken the EOS out of its bag since!

Incredibly small & light, fantastic screen, very impressive movies, sharp photos, and very very fast and responsive. My last Canon "consumer" digicam was a G1 and this beats it in every respect, plus it's about 1/5 the size!

Yes, the movies on the SD300 are marvellous. Even though you can only get a few minutes on a high-capacity card, at least you can GET them! I wish they had put this mode in the S70, or at least MY S70!. I am even considering getting a SD300 for the movie mode, indoor focus and ultra-small size.

Another happy SD300 owner here.

Bought it before christmas as a sidekick to my 300D and I love it. No soft corners, no cracked LCD, sharp pictures, very fast, and great movie mode.

I even dropped it on the floor once, but it survived (knock on wood).

Well, I am another very happy user of this Ixus 40 (SD300). Great camera, soft corners are almost not visible on 20x30 cm (A4). Video is perfect!! PF is sometimes there, but only on some photos and I can live with it. It is also very fast and so small ,that you can take it everywhere. LCD is great, but it scratsches fast, because of the size. A protector is advised...

You can see some photo's on my site. The most photos of mexico and guatemala are taken with this nice camera...

Little follow up...
Yes, they are very impressive.

I had a Fuji S602Z a while ago, it did VGA movies with sound too, but they were quite "jerky". The SD300's movies are very very smooth. I hooked it up to the TV the other day & watched a few, they are pretty close to broadcast quality.

I agree about the file size issue, I have a 1Gb UltraIII SD card and that is only enough for around 8 and a half minutes of VGA movies.

Those photos look beautiful - exactly the reason I was strongly considering the SD300 (I plan to crop out the blurred edges, if necessary). Do you mind my asking how long you've had the camera for, and what kind of protection you use when you take it travelling/skiing?

(Maybe the LCD issues are with the American SD300, rather than the Ixus 40?)
