SD20 pictures Lincolns tomb

Hey Bob, I thought you were going to take your ball and go home. Thanks for sticking around. Great images. Just came back from popping around Manhattan with my SD20. Over 200 shots. Went to Central Park and took images of The Gates.

I was in Washington D.C. this past fall with my old SD10. More great images. We say it over and over again, but what planet is this micro-wonder from? Simply the best!

How ya doing Billy. Thanks for the nice words.Im sure not going to stop

taking pictures with my SD20.It's just a great little camera.Hey post some of your shots.I also took 68 pic's with my G6 today.I had to give it a work out just to see how it does.Im happy with the G6 for sure.Ill post some pictures in the morning.thanks again Billy im back lol.Cheers Bob.

Bob...when I'm leaving the house, I take all of my change out of my left pants pocket and slide the SD20 in there. When I see something I want to shoot, it's right there. It might not start as fast as the newer digicams, but it is much quicker on the draw.

I shoot everything. I was a great old VW Microbus today, whipped out the SD20, and shot away. I never would have done that with my Sony V1 or Sony 828.

A 2.5-inch screen is the least of my concerns. This SD20 is the finest point-and-shoot camera on the market. I don't know how Canon did it. Small sensor and lens...yet the most detailed images outside of a DSLR. The image detail even beats your G6 and my Sony 828.

Detractor's say..."No optical zoom and optical viewfinder." Bah Humbug! The next time I see somebody using an optical viewfinder on a small digicam will be the first time. What nobody tells them is that only 80% of the framed image is included in the optical viewfinder.

And video quality. Who cares? What a stupid feature. A gimmick. I want a still camera to take still pictures. The video that the SD20 provides is enough for me.

thanks for sharing... I feel like I was right there sightseeing with you! I first one is razor sharp actually the outside pictures of SD20 are very sharp!!

keep posting,

Hi Everybody.I went to Abraham lincolns Tomb today saturday.Used my
SD20,G6 the G6 pictures i'll post tomorrow morning. On the way home
we took a ferry across the mississippi river from batchtown Ill to
winfield mo.Comments please Cheers Bob.

If I had the choice between a A510, SD20, SD300......... I'd pick the SD20 for its razor sharp images and compactness. The indoors red eye pictures, well that could be worked on.

I like the term razor. I figured out the pixel size of the sd20's CCD the other day and I concluded that each individual pixel on the sd20 is less than HALF the size of the s400's pixels (another wonder from Canon which I've been been spoiled by due to the large sensor and modest pixel count making all images great! sd300 vs s400? Gimme a break! No comparison what so ever!!).

I compared the 2 side by side and the s400 did do a bit better than the sd20 in low light w/o a flash (handheld, but enough light to not show the "shake" warning). However, I know the sd20 is better outdoors. That leads me to the conclusion that the sensor size is more important for taking pictures in low lighting but when you do have sufficient light the 3x zoom lens is still a burdon on the picture's quality

Also, the sd20 has VGA movie clips, right? I don't have that now, so it's a big step up for me (but not really seeing that I'd rather take a QVGA move on my cell phone than the s400 because it's more compressed and although the s400's movies are a bit better the phone has a spotlight on it and smaller file sizes[ http://www.vodafone.jp/english/products/kisyu/v602sh/index.html] ).

Man, I just wish a Digic II sd30 came out though. I just want the Digic II for more speed and better battery life. Compared to the sd300, the sd20's battery is huge. With Digic II, it'd be like 15g lighter!

I tried to compare pixel sizes in this thread if you're interested: http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1010&message=12424754 )

Hi

I wouldn't get too excited about the VGA mode on the SD20... I think it's only 10fps and has a maximum length of about 30 seconds (but, hey, on the other hand 30 secs was all the old clockwork Bolex cine cameras did and many a fine movie was shot with them!)

I can't speak for the SD20, but the SD10's speed is fine (this time last year it was considered 'fast' for a P&S). If you either:
  • set it to hyperfocal (quick shot)
or
  • focus via a half-press before you finally press the shutter
then the response is 'quick enough' IMHO... the 78,000 pixel LCD puts a much lower strain on the chipset which in turn allows the responsiveness to be higher than with a normal Digic I camera

Digic II would obviously make the camera yet faster and allow for better movies, but the real gain would be in the autonomy (but why they don't simply upgrade the existing 790mah rating for the current battery is beyond me). I don't think any replacement should have a lighter battery since part of the camera's 'quality feel' comes from it having a little bit of 'weight' to it. At just over 100g it isn't too heavy for any purposes and I think a better battery (and hence flash) capability would justify keeping the weight the same

But that withstanding, I wouldn't hold your breath for an SD30... somehow I suspect it 'ain't gonna happen'. See the undeserved disinterest, and in some cases downright hostility, on these boards towards the camera, in spite of its obvious excellent capabilities. To be honest I'm surprised the series got as far the SD20 :-(

Hi Parallaxproblem. Thanks for sticking up for the SD20.I only bought it so id always have a camera with me everywhere i went.Im just posting

a few pictures shot with it.I've never said it was better then someone else's camera.i dont care about the movie function.outside it's fast enough for me.So Digic II doesn't matter either.I have a G6 that's takes

really nice pic's and im very happy with it.hey paralaxproblem check out my G6 shots at abraham lincolns tomb in springfield Ill USA you might like em.Cheers Bob.

Hi Bob

You're right... too much talking about cameras and not enough looking at pictures on my part!!!!

The G6 pictures are really nice! The subject matter is very interesting and they are of course very well taken. They show-off the G6's capabilities very well! The SD20 pictures in this thread are also, as usual, very good, but I think this time around I prefer the ones from the G6 (because of what you're taking the photos of rather than because of the camera taking them!)

Thanks, and please keep the pics coming!

Hi Parallaxproblem.Thanks.yeah the G6 is in a class above the SD20 and that's the way i like it.The tomb pictures i took with the G6 i think are my best pictures i've ever taken.Im really very happy with the outcome.

Im kinda surprised that not many are looking at them or at least they haven't made any comments on em.maybe tomorrow more will look at them.Hey your my friend and im glad you are lol.Cheers Bob.

Yeah, guys like you talking about the sd20 (Parallax) and people posting shots of it (Bob) convinced me of how great it is. I saw the sd10 come out a few months after getting my s400 and I was mad because it was smaller than mine but I didn't like it because it didn't have zoom. I didn't realize that it was so sharp!

Hi tjdean. You know i kinda thought you diden't like the SD20 i guess i was

reading you post wrong.i really rely on my G6 the SD20 is just to have something small with me all the time.Outdoors it's fast and takes nice and sharp pic's but indoors with the flash it pretty much sucks unless your 6 feet or less. But i knew that when i bought it.As for the zoom it does have

a 6X digital zoom.I really dont miss the zoom at all.And dont care about the movie function at all.It seems when i post pictures shot from the SD20 i get kinda negative comments not so much on the pictures but on the SD20 it's self. Thanks for looking Cheers Bob.

Yeah, I like the camera. But, just because I like it doesn't mean that I won't point out it's negative points for the people thinking of buying it. There's no reason to buy it (and return it) if you want to take a lot of indoor photos or are looking for something with zoom.

I like the sd20's size and picture quality. Also, most importantly, it looks nice and I feel good holding it. I would like to see a Digic II version with a smaller battery, 9 ft flash, and an extra button on the back. But, until that comes out I'll be happy with the sd20 in my pocket walking around in shorts this summer without a bag going places the s400 wouldn't be going (cell phone camera doesn't cut it). If a 4/5 MP sd30 does arrive, since I only paid paid $235 for the sd20, I won't mind ebaying it for $150 or so.

Bob, you're not the first to misread my posts: I've hated Sony for a problem a few years back (totally unrelated to cameras), but, I pointed out that Canon will probably lose a lot of business to Sony's DSC-P150 seeing it has more manual controls than the sd500. Someone argumentative misunderstood:
http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1009&message=12290644

Just for the record, I took my sd20 and compared the out door pics to the s400. The sd20 made my trusty s400 look like an sd300!! I'd hate to be someone with the sd300 comparing it to the sd20!

But, when I first got the camera it was night time and I took pictures in the house. I'd have to say that the s400 (pixels being 200% the size of the sd20) was the same if not better than the sd20.

That night, though, I turned off ALL the lights though and set the sd20 on ISO 200 and fired blindly unfocused into the dark. Things up to 12 feet away were illuminated nicely! I have NO complaints with the flash anymore. Sure, the pictures are noisy, but in the dark I'm not looking for a crisp shot anyways. Better than the Casios.

So, put that baby on ISO 200 and you have yourself a nice bar/club camera. Put it to ISO 50 and you've got the best compact camera around in daylight situations. It does both, and I'm happy
