I recently bought a new 512mb xd card and i took about 100 pics with a fuji cam. All was good until I tried to get my files onto the computer. For some reason, it won't read the card. Now i'm pretty sure that its not the card considering it works on my cam. I can delete files and still take pics with it but it won't read it. I can also take it to a place like Blacks and get the files burnt onto a cd from there. It will say "please insert disk" in windows when I try to read the card. Now, I also tried out 2 memory card readers, (one multi card reader and one specifically for xd cards) and I know they work fine because it works with my previous 16mb xd card.

If anyone could please help me out with this, it would be awesome. I'm in the middle of many projects for a graphics design program, so a camera is pretty essential for me.

thnx

Some card readers can't read large capacity cards. I bought one recently that claimed to be good for 256MB maximum, but it couldn't even do that. I sent it back.

The thing is, I lost the USB cable for my cam so thats the reason why i'm using my card reader in the first place. My computer can't even detect the card so I can't format or do anythign to it. And I tried 2 different card readers so I don't think its the card readers problem either.

Is the problem downloading from the camera? If so, what is the camera?

My F710 has just started the same thing. WinXP can get the thumbnails from the camera (in its digicam wiz) but the files themselves cannot be downloaded. The card is OK because I can get the files using a Fuji USB removable memorystick reader.

Well thats the thing, I don't know where the problem is. The cammera doesn't really have anything to do with it since I don't have the USB wire for it anyways. I know the card works because I got the image files burnt from a photo service place. I also tried 2 different card readers and they both don't read it. I just got a 256mb card to see if that would detect on my computer. So currently, I have a 512mb and a 256 mb card that doesn't detect on windows through my card reader, and i havea 16mb card that detects. They are all from fuji and are the exact same except for the capacities.

There are far more problems caused by card readers than anything else; so, trying only two card readers doesn't prove anything either way.

Use the camera to reformat the cards, and see if that clears the problem.

I would tend to look at the card readers as the culprit, your statement that the computer detects the 16mb but not the 256mb or 512mb certainly would seem to point in that direction. You stated that you knew the 512mb card works as you had files burnt from a photo service, and you state that the cam takes pics on the cards. So what does that leave?? Either your computer or the CARD READER.

I know its not my computer either because I tried 2 other computers as well. Is there a certain card reader that you know would work for sure? It might be the card reader but I have 2 different ones as well. So i'm not sure if that may be the case either.

He means you should go out and spend the $5 to buy a new USB cable for your cam so you can prove to yourself that there is nothing wrong with your cards, and it is your card reader that is faulty.

I tried to find out what cam you have but you didn't mention it anywhere I could see, but you did say in a previous thread you had trouble sourcing the cable. What cam have you got? The s7k and s602 both use common-as-batski-leavings cables, I'd be surprised if fuji didn't use the same connectors on their other cams.

the problem with that is, I already tried to find a wire for this and it's not exactly $5. Its around the $40 for the wire which I can't even find in any stores (its a special one). Price isn't even the problem, its just really hard to find in my area.

Check the manufactures website to see if a firmware update is available for your card reader. That could help in reading larger capacity media. Might or might not work, but it worth a try.

For example, to use my 512MB xD card with my recently purchased
"Dazzle" reader, I had to install an update from here:

http://www.ziocorp.com/support/product_update_xDSM.html

(Note: That update only applies to "Dazzle" high-speed xD/SM readers.
Zio Corp. now handles the Dazzle readers.)

I wonder if my updated Dazzle reader might work with the
forthcoming 1GB cards? Probably not.

Ahh, I see. That one is an odd connector. According to http://www.pccables.com/70592.htm (who sell it for $20) it is used on quite a few of the finepix models though, so perhaps you might find one somewhere.

Anyway, I'd take the overwhelming advice you've had here to suspect your card reader. Perhaps the XD spec was altered when they brought out the larger cards, leaving most readers unable to read them properly? I don't know, but the symptoms you've provided to suggest the reader(s) as being the problem. I have read that a number of card readers have problems with xD cards over a certain size. Sorry I can't be of more help.

would it be possible to use a card adapter to fix this problem?

would it be possible to use a card adapter to fix this problem?
To be honest I really don't know. My initial guess is that it would not, since the fix for some other card readers has been to get a firmware update, I doubt that this is a problem that could be solved with a simple xD to (something) converter.

If you have a computer store nearby with either a good returns policy, or that is willing to demonstrate the gear, you can just try out a new reader and see if that sorts it. For that matter, if they stock xD converters (I've not seen any myself) then you may be able to do the same with that.
