--I posted a few days ago on this and followed various advice including sownloading the RAW uprade 2.4 from Adobe and Downloading Pix master (sic) and neither of them support the 8800 NEF files. 8700 but not the 8800. I got the images into PSCS with ACDSEE 7.0 but it won't display the files now so I can't even try to work with them there (they make no claims about RAW processing anyway , but thought I would try)

This camera has been out for months now and it seems ridiculous that adobe doesn't have an upgrade for the 8800. I get "disc error") every time I try to work with the file I imported (as above).

Mike Chaney mentioned Breeze Browser and C-1 Pro and of course there is Nikon Capture. Must we "prosumers' spend another $100 to get our RAW into Adobe?

ACR 2.4 supports the 8800 nefs. Be sure to put the 8BI file into path where CS can find it at initialization such as:
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop CS\Plug-Ins\File Formats

It should work for you. Try opening the files from within Photoshop, by associating .nef with photoshop, or dragging the file onto the Photoshop work space.
Good luck,
Kelly

--ON ACR 2.4: On the Adobe website it did NOT list 8800 as supported, only up to 8700.

However, I did download it and put it into the "File Formats" folder. even took it out of its seperate folder (with a readme file) and placed as file like the other format files and yes, I did remove the old one.

When I went back into PSCS to work on the files the screen opens for RAW work, showing a rather simple slider and another button. I wanted to move on, so accepted what was there and got 'disc error' again. and it will go no further.

The Adobe upgrade is for the Nikon NEF files by the CP-8800. Here is the step by step. Do it again. It works.

Close your Photoshop.
Click on my computer
Click in your c drive (c:)
Find your folder for "Program Files"
Open that folder
Look for the "Adobe" folder
Open that folder
Look for whate you have "photoshot Elements 3" or "Photoshop CS" folder
Open that folder
Look for a folder called "Plug-ins"
Open that folder
In in should be a folder called "File Formats"
Open that folder
In it should be the old Raw files (CameraRaw....)

Take them out, you could save them in another folder on your desktop or dump them

Put in the new files
Close everything and try it.

Try it again. Good luck.

I use the 2.4 pluggin in CS with my 8800 and have no problems. Are you sure you are putting the pluggin in the correct folder? Have you removed the old raw pluggin?

That sounds like the old Nikon plug-in. It is an absolute disaster. If you have Nikon Capture or the like, try uninstalling it and try again. There could be a conflict between the Nikon plug-in and ACR.
Good luck,
Kelly

I've got the newest version of Adobe Camera Raw and it still doesn't truely support 8800 NEF files. What happens when you open an 8800 NEF with Photoshop CS is that some Nikon plug in pops up that allows you to capture the NEF to Photoshop. That's fine, but it's not as good as the Adobe raw converter that I'm used to with my 10D raw files.

This page at Adobe shows supported cameras: http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/cameraraw.html

I've got software watching that page for 8800 support to appear and when it does I'll say something.

Anyone in the Springfield Ohio area interested in starting a digital photography group?

Right now I'm shooting stills with a Nikon Coolpix 5200, 8400, 8800 and a Canon 10D. I'm shooting video with Canon Optura Xi. No brand owns me so I'll post in whatever forum I want.

Yes, John that is exactly what I did and verified it being in that location: C: Program Files/Adobe/Photoshop CS/Plugins/File Formats:
BMP.8BI 32KB
Camera Raw .8Bi 4,789KB
Filmstrip. 8BI 32KB
PCX.8BI 36KB
Photo CD.8BI 132KB
Pixar.8BI 32KB
Targa.8BI 40KB
--

The only variation in file downloaded was the lower case "i" in the Camera Raw name as supplied by Adobe and that I had to take it out of the folder it came in (AFTER extracting the whole thing from compressed file that also had a" readme" file in it)

In response to another response I looked for a NEF Plugin which I found in the "Photoshop Only" file under Photoshop CS/Plugins/Photoshop Only/Plug ins/File Formats:

Nikon NEF Plugin.8BI 320KB
Nikon YCC TIFF 46KB
and several others

One person suggests that there is a conflict here. I did install the latest NIKON VIEW a few days ago in response to this problem, but only got the problem I have now. However unless someone tells me it is OK I dont want to mess with the PHOTOSHOP ONLY folder unless I am sure it won't mess something else up.

I will go back to Adobe support to check the file, but I am pretty sure it didn't say anything about the 8800 as being supported. However if others are having no trouble, it doesn't matter what they say there.

Thanks for your patience and help. It will sort out eventually I am sure.

JUST AN UPDATE: NO CHANGE. i WENT OUT TOOK A COUPLE MORE RAW PICTURES. THIS TIME i TRNASFERRED THEM TO COMPUTER USING THE LATEST NIKON VIEW 6.23 , GOT THE NIKON NEF SCREEN AND THERE WAS NOW PREVIEW IMAGE AND ATTMPTING CHANGES BROUGHT THE SAME 'DISC ERROR MESSAGE' .

IT IS OBVIOUS THAT THE NIKON NEF PLUGIN IS TAKING PRECEDENCE HERE AND THE ADOBE 2.4 ISN'T COMING INOT PLAY.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN IF I MOVE THE NIKON NEF FILE OUT OF PHOTOSHOP ONLY FOLDER (AS ABOVE)?

Steve you may want to try
http://www.pixmantec.com/products/rawshooter_essentials.html

Its also FREE

It does support 8800 nefs and works better than any other raw
editor. Unfortunatelythe program is not supported for
Windows 2000 support
Athlon or Athlon XP support

Hope this helps.

Thanks everyone.

As suggested by one of you the Nikon Nef file was the problem. Here's what I did.

I decided not to be chicken and moved the Nikon NEF file out of the Photoshop Only/Plugins/Fileformats folder. Put it on my desktop.

I went back in to PSCS clicked on my NEF RAW image and presto that wonderful screen to work on RAW files came up and didn't give me disc error. Now I can climb THIS new mountain of learning curves.

I am sure others have run into this, without realizing it. It was simple in the end--ain't it always.

(Now if I can only figure out how to get the right page size in Q image I will be off and running )
Thanks for all your help.

I installed the RawShooter Essentials software, but when I load my CP 8800 RAW (NEF) files, they load as a split image, two identical images side by side with different colour casts. Is this a problem with the setup, or is it a problem with the RAW file?

Here is an example screen shot:

http://members.shaw.ca/gwoodworth/RawShooter.htm

All the pictures appear in this split image, even the thumbnails. Any ideas?

Wow, I just happened to look at this page right after you posted... anyway, so you get the regular Camera Raw window and not some Nikon plugin?

Also, do you happen to know if this includes the 8400 too or just the 8800?

I'm going to have to try upgrading again.
