Battery Capacity

Hi all,
I was reading a camera magazine here in the UK.

A correspondent had bought new NiMh batteries at 2400 mah and couldn't get them to work in his Nikon 8700 (?)

He said he had contacted Nikon who said they wouldn't work and could damage the camera.

I always thought that the battery capacity only influenced the life i.e. length of time before recharging.

Are there any recommendations/restrictions on the Minolta cameras - mines a 7hi - or is this total rubbish?

Malcolm

AFAIK it's rubbish. As long as the voltage and polarity is right and the battery physically fits where it's supposed to go there should be no problem.

Picture a battery as a tank of water with a tap on the side. The voltage is the water pressure at the tap. The Ma/h is just the size of the tank. The larger the tank the longer the water will flow at the same pressure.

I have heard that some 2300mAH and up NIMH cells are made with a higher internal resistance. This can cause voltage drop under load, which, if it is enough, will cause the camera to shut down for low voltage, or cause the camera's internal power supply to run hotter than normal.

In this case it is as if the water pressure in the tank is OK, but there is a too small pipe feeding the water.

I havent tried any of these batteries myself, so I can't say for certain if this is the case, or if it is just that NIMH cells need a few cycles of charge/discharge before they reach full capacity.
