What is the meaning of the term "100% crop"?

It's the image straight out of the camera, but not the whole thing (since an 8 megapixel file is HUGE) -- it's a little cut-out of it to give you a sample of the lense/camera/picture/focus quality.

It's when you open an image in Photoshop or other editing program at 100% view, cut (crop) a part of that image (some detail), and save it as a new image file. It is typically used for illustrative purposes in technical discussions here, to show the quality of a lens, or some problem, like lack of sharpness (or to boast how sharp one's new lens is :)

It means a 1:1 pixel level view of part of an image.

Cropping means to trim a section of a photo.

100% means that the cropped image must not be resized before saving. That way 1 pixel on your monitor = 1 pixel of the actual image.

By definition this is done on full sized images out of the camera or RAW convertor. The cropy is typically quite heavy, since you really don't want more than 800x800 pixels shown - otherwise the image is too large to view at 1:1

There is a further point that many people interpret 100% crops to mean "show me unedited 1:1 image sections" meaning no sharpening, contrast or saturation enhancements. This is not strictly adhered to but shows usually lens buyers exactly what the lens is capable of (or more usually the shooter is not capable of) ;o)

It's only an oxymoron if you don't understand the reference. "100%" does not refer to the crop's size compared to the original image--should be obvious but for some reason it's not--but rather the crop's size compared to the size of that PORTION of the original image. If you crop and resize the crop up or down, that's not a 100% crop. Or if you take a full crop (don't chop off anything) and resize it that's not a 100% crop either. 100% crop is only when you take some or all of the original image and don't resize it--display it as is. Makes sense to me.

Then again, I can see how it's confusing to people who don't know what it means. How about something even more cryptic to non-techies like "native res crop" :)

What is the meaning of the term "100% crop"?
It means someone has posted an image that was cropped from his JPEG or TIFF without doing any resizing. It is at the full pixel resolution (which shows as "100 percent" in Photoshop and some other editors).

The more correct way to say this is "original pixel resolution."
