I was asked to do some picture for my friends band. They would like it to look professional. I am by no means a pro but would like some advice to help.

What i have 20D- 17-40L, 50 1.8, 28-135 is 70-200 is, 550EX

Some outdoor and some indoor pictures.

They looked around and they like ones from this band under "media" 2005 pictures @ http://thewaitinggame.net/

What can i do to get results like them? What kind of settings? Flash? Locations? Any help would be GREAT.

THANKS!

MC

First you don't need really 4 lens. keep the 17-40 and the 70-200IS as they are the best lens you have. Keep also the Flash for some indor shots.

what you can do is shoot a lot of photos under different conditions
and see which one are the best, work then on PS CS and make some nice
Post-Processings !!

Why do you suggest getting rid of lens, one of which you have yourself?
Depend on his style of shooting any of these lenses would be an ideal choice.

Hey

What kind of setting do you think will work well when using the flash for indoor shoots?

Thanks

No offense intended, but if your friend wants the images to look professional, maybe they should consider hiring a pro. You could help pay the bill, with the condition that you would assist, and learn how it's done. You would improve your photography skills.. Pretty inexpensive education.

I used 10D- 28mm f/2.8 and 50mm f/1.4. I didn't need my 70-200mm. I did however seriously wish I had the 17-40mm, it would have been soooo handy. I think the 17-40mm will be your primary lens for this, but bring your 70-200 just in case.

Looking at the Waiting Game website, I'm gonna suggest mostly outdoor stuff. If thats what they want. Don't use the flash unless you need to. Get a white foamcore boad from an art supply place or walmart to use as a reflector. It will fill shadows at such adequatly.

The indoor stuff will be more challenging without studio lighting equipment.

In a make-shift studio in my basement I used; Main light - Metz 45CT-4 with omni bounce, (rigged a small box around it). Fill light - Vivitar 5600 and big homemade umbrella. On location I used the Metz again with omnibounce, (no box) because it was too dark to shoot available light in th fort, (Iactually had to have one of the girlfriens shine a flashlight in the face of the guys to even focus.

If you want to check the stuff I did, it's at http://www.geocities.com/rameses__ii/index.html - click on the Strenuus Promo gallery.

Dude, Have fun. That's most important.

Yeah, but if he just does it, the only thing the band will lose is a couple of hours. If he can't pull it off, they hire a pro and no hard feelings right. I say go for it, and just do your best and learn as much as you can. Right.

Have a good time. Try something new. Experiment. Enjoy it.

The closest lens you have to the range you're looking at is the 28-135 IS, though I don't know how good the bokeh is. I'm thinking it's f/2.8 glass they're using. (In L-glass that would be 24-70 f/2.8L or 28-70 f/4L; also Tamron 28-75 f/2.8, Sigma 24-60 f/2.8, etc.). Some of the focus blur would make me suspect the use of the lens blur filter and a feathered mask in photoshop....or even a tilt shift lens though that's difficult in a portraiture environment. The subjects are very carefully posed. And as always with people shots, shoot a lot of takes!

..if I were to shoot a band promos, that would probably spent the most time on my camera. Maybe a little 50f1.8 or 70-200 for the bokeh on individual shots..

Lighting could be tricky, tho.. Maybe you could use reflectors..

And keep an eye on your compositions, as I think that is the most important thing on this type of shooting..

Not that I have any experience on the subject, because I don´t ;-)

Good luck,
