I had my new 20d out in the cold and snow this weekend. It was cold (maybe 11 degrees F at the time) and very windy. After a while it developed Error 99 everytime the shutter fired.
Nothing seemed to fix this. Popped the battery. Changed the batteyr. Changed lenses. Cleaned lens contacts. Nothing.
However after a 15 minute trip in my (relatively) warm car it started working again.
Took it out in the cold again and it worked fine.
Now the temperature was clearly warmer the second time or at least far less windy. I made an effort to make sure that I didn't exhale anywhere near the camera. (Which I may have been doing before, particularly with the camera on a tripod.)
My friend's D30 worked fine through all this. (I was switching lenses so maybe my camera chilled down faster. Or maybe a chance snowflake made its way inside...)
So, did my camera freeze? (I froze. I thought I was dressed for sub zero but I froze. So maybe the wind was really cold.) Or what the heck happened?
Anyone have similar issues in the cold with their 20D? (Or 10D or whatever.)
