A number of sources (on this site and elsewhere) have pointed to the Mitsui Gold or Gold Archival disks as being more stable than other products. There is also a new Fuji product called PhotoDisc which is marketed for archiving photos.

I have not been able to find either one of them, or for that matter, any other CD-R which is claimed to be long life, in the standard online catalogs, such as B&H. They seem to be sold only by the manufacturer or by vendors which specialize in media. Most of these specialized vendors only sell them in multiples of 100 disks.

Does anyone understand why our usual sources of photo supplies do not carry the archival disks?

Pegasus: Check Verbatim "Medidisc" (Medi as in Medical Record archiving):

You can get Individual disc in Jewel Case or 50-pack spindles.

On a serious note, my new online store ( http://www.ar-kiv.com ) will be carrying Delkin's Archival Gold (same as Mitsui Gold just re-branded) in 25 and 100 spindles. But if would like to purchase smaller amounts - Archival Gold CD-R 10-Pack Wallet or Archival Gold CD-R 16-Pack Binder - let me know.

I bought the Mitsui Gold here: http://www.american-digital.com/

Great price, customer service, and quick shipping. I highly recommend them.

Why can I not find CD-RW and why are they not so popular? Also what
about DVD-R/RW, why are these more reliable than CD's?
Princess,

The materials used in RW media a less stable than the R media, so they should be avoided for long term storage. I don't think there is any info about DVD-R/DVD+R longivity vs CD
