My wife is a professional photographer and I need a christmas gift - and fast. She shoots a Fuji S2 Pro and has been looking at the Metz 54 MZ-4 and the Nikon SB 800. After asking around, I've been told those are best available, but that the Metx may have an edge. Is it worth the extra $50-$100? Thanks!

The SB-800 is i-TTL compatible, which is Nikon's latest system. Will the Metz support that? If not, then I say the SB-800.

Both are good choices.

iTTL is irrelavent, as the S2 (and S3) only support DTTL anyway.

I use a SB800 and I've been very impressed with it. The SB80DX i had previously was also excellent.

The SB800 is i-TTL compatible, as is the Metz', which is also D-TTL compatible, but, alas, the S2Pro is not! An SB-28, which should be available now at a lower price, (it's a model that's not in production anymore, but still in stock with many dealers) fits the bill nicely.

However, if your wife is going to trade in the S2 for another camera in the near future, the SB28 will be outdated. In that case I'd go for the Metz. It's more powerful, and has a second reflector, so you can combine direct and indirect flash.

-Does anyone know whether the SB-80DX will functon well on the S3? I have a brand new one never out of the box.-

If she is a pro, she will need a unit with lots of power avaiable as light falls off at an inverse square as a function of distance. Diffusers also rob light & power. Go for a unit with lots of battery capacity and a high power rating. Don't buy her a wimpy prosumer unit...

We had a thread going on this not so long ago, the Metz and Nikon guide numbers are figured at different angles. Level them out and the Nikon, as I recall, was a bit more powerfull in the end ( not by very much).

I don't think it's irrelevant, since down the road, i-TTL capability will allow more options than sticking with D-TTL only flashes. For example, both the D2h or D70 use i-TTL and offer features which complement the S2's virtues. It's likely that any future bodies that Fuji gets from Nikon will have better flash tech.
