Breaking Windows Explorer's nasty habits

I would like to change a default setting in Windows Explorer and do not know how to do it or if it can even be done. I am currently running Win2000.

When I open Win Explorer the darn thing always defaults to opening at the My Documents folder, with subfolders showing, in the File tree on the left hand side of the screen.

I would like to change that so that Explorer always starts at My Computer with all my various network drives subfolders showing. Preferably then listing the contents of my C: drive in the window to the right.

Is this possible or am I simply dreaming about a level of user functionality that will never be attained by Microsoft products?

Your technical advice and wizardry are appreciated.

Gary

Use this:
%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe n, e,c:

Maybe I should elaborate a little. One way to do it:

Go to your \Windows folder. Right-click on explorer.exe and select Copy. Go to your desktop, right-click and choose Paste Shortcut. Right-click the shortcut and choose Properties and paste "%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe n, e,c:" (withought quotes) in the Target field. Click OK and drag the shortcut to a place where you can find it, e.g. the Quick Launch tray, Start Menu etc. Start Explorer from there.

Why would you go to Windows Explorer to open My Computer when you can just click on My Computer? An easier thing to do would be to create a shortcut to what you want and then drag it to your taskbar anyway.

Several reasons, to list a few: My computer opens the window standard with the Folder panel hidden. My Computer can be hidden by other windows open on your desktop, whereas the Quick Launch panel is always visible.

Yeah, that's almost what I wrote.

I usually use the keyboard for opening a Explorer window, and it goes to My Computer, have you try that way!?

Just press:

window key + e ("W"indows "E"xplorer)

BTW taht's the key with a window drawing, if you have a keyboard with it, usually two.

Shortcuts are handy.

Best way to view files is to press the start key/window key and E at the same time.

Okay, the winning solution I am going with right now is the one suggested by Loewe. It took a moment to get set up but once I had cut, copied and pasted as directed it worked great. And I learned something new to boot as I had never done something like that before with that target field.

The Win+E suggestion is not an option as I get the nice restrictions warning in the form of a pop-up that I can't do that due to imposed restrictions on the machine. (It is a work computer)

The same goes for additional installed software.

I think it would have been darn near impossible to find the answer just by searching the internet.

Thanks again,
Gary
