Haha, you made a biggg mistake, NEVER hold something that looks nice or fun or useful or anything else in your hands because you'll end up buying it. I can't tell you much about accesories or any of that fun stuff because mine is still on its way. I got the kit, mostly because all I wanted was an inexpensive lens for the time being since after buying that beast, I have no money left over for extra toys... As far as literature-type things, you might want to check out the manual that can be found online. Do a search for "Canon EOS 20D manual" and it will be the first link. Sorry I cannot remember the link, I just got done looking through the thing, and now I plan on thoroughly reading it through, and the link escaped me as I got somewhat into it.

I hope you enjoy your "object of greatness," and I hope mine comes this week like it should (still can't figure out why I can't get the stupid tracking info to work on UPS's website) so I can tell you of my experiences with the kit lens and so I can enjoy the darned thing that I just hacked up $1500 for. lol

$750 is too low.... plan on getting a platinum card.

Don't get the garbage lenses with the camera.

Do get a Canon 50mm f/1.8

Do get other lenses from Sigma that have the EX designation. I own the 15-30 , 70-200 and 120-300

Do plan on spending a LOT more than the $750 you have already spent.

Do enjoy this hobby!

I would get it with the 17-85 if I were starting out fresh.

I got the 20d a little over a month ago and its awesome! I went with the 70-200 2.8L IS and the 17-40L f4. I use the 70-200 90 percent of the time. This lens rocks and with the IS it is very hand holdable. I would also recomend the 580 EX flash as it has specific digital advantages and i enjoy the battery grip even though so many people complain about it..i wouldnt leave the house without it. Plan on spending way more the 750 if you want quality lenses...I have heard tokina's top of the line lenses are awesome and much cheaper then canon L lenses. Have fun!

$750 for accessories ain't much. Figure in another battery, some cards, and you're talking about $500-600 left over. Now, I assume you'll want a flash, a 420 ex at a minimum - another $180. So, how much do you have in your pocket? Not much. With the $300-400 left over for lenses you don't have a lot of choices for what you want to do. The best options at this point are to buy a couple of primes - especially important if you want to shoot in low light. My recommendations would to be to buy the 50 1.8 (

Welcome!

Last year I went from a Sony 707 to the 10D, so I am kind of familiar with the route you are taking.

For beautiful low light results on a budget, I would recommend the Tamron 28-75 F2.8 XR DI lens. It is tack sharp and runs around $340. The other must-have low light lens is the Canon 50mm F1.8, which runs around $70. These lenses have served me very well in low light. In fact, I own more expensive lenses now (don't get me started on how addictive lens buying is...) and these two are still among the best, optically.

That should leave you enough for the 420EX flash, and some 1gb cards and an extra battery.

Best of luck!

It's not perfect (none are) but it is an execllent all around lens. It is the right range for the 20D and has IS. Don't bother with the plastic 18-55.

I suggest you buy the 18-55 kit lens. It isn't the greatest lens by any stretch of the imagination, but is isn't nearly as bad as some people here will say. It does seem to vary... the one I had with my 300d was fairly good. Some are apparently awful.

My reasoning is this: it's cheap (only $100 w/ the kit), fair quality, and it gets you started while you research all the options mentioned in this thread and elsewhere on this board. You can even use it w/ low light on the 20d since high ISO settings are so good on this camera.

Add a couple of cards, a battery, a couple of filters, and you'll still have some money left. Save it up for your dream lens(es). As had been said, this isn't going to be inexpensive!

This camera was made for the 17-85 IS. Great Image Stabalization great useable range, fast focusing, good build quality. If you had one lens for all around 20D use - you want this.

The flash works with this lens without blockage at 17 - not with the 17-40.

The Canon semi hard case works perfectly with this lens. Nice combo.
