I am looking for the best way of using olympus c-8080 and orion apex 102mm telescope together.

Scopetronics makes an adapter kit. Does anyone have any experience using that or can recommend a better adapter?

I use a Scopetronix "MaxView 40" eyepiece with a Scopetronix-provided step ring and adaptor tube to mount my Olympus C-4000 to my Orion Apex 102. I have been very pleased with the results. I've posted some photos here:

The larger diameter lens on the 8080 may cause some vignetting. Maybe someone else will have some experince they will share on that. You might even ask Scopetronix about the issue. It's not a problem on the C-4000 as long as I stay near the wide-angle end of the zoom.

The MaxView 40 provides a very solid and secure way of mounting a camera to a scope. As I said, I'm very pleased with mine.

I'll be interested to hear what you end up with as I hope to upgrade to an 8080 some day.

Very interested in your telescope/C-4000 combination. Have been thinking about a scopetronic kit for my C-750, but I really needed your illustrations to make up my mind.

I have been fudging moon shots with the B-300 teleconverter and 4 x digital zoom. Exposure for half a moon works out about 1/400 second at 5.6. You quote 1/200 sec at f2.8. - Goodbye handheld pot shots.

Henry:

Glad you found the photos helpfull. Be aware, though, that the half moon shot was taken with a 12.5" telescope, which gathers about 9 times as much light as the little Orion 102 (4"). The Orion will still take a great moon shot but the exposure details will be much different.

I appreciate your comments.

I probably won't get the adapter in time for the nearly perfect total eclipse of the Moon viewable from North and South America as well as Europe the evening of October 27, 9:14 p.m. EDT to 10:23 p.m.

Hope you get great photos whatever equipment you use:)

Hi guys,

I would like to see your shots of the eclipse if you’re going to make. I don’t have equipment, so please don’t be shy and post your images. This will be rally treat for all of us.

Thanks, :-)
Alex.

Alex:

It rained here in Redlands through most of the eclipse but I got a few shots towards the end:

Also, a correction on my earlier post about vignetting with the C4000 and MaxView 40: it occurs at the wide angle end of the zoom, not the telephoto end as I mistakenly implied earlier.

Hi Ben,

Thanks for remembering me. These shots of the eclipse are very, very nice. What a great details. I looked at your site to see what you were using. It’s very impressive.

I was planning and really looking forward to make some shots with 8080 (it wouldn’t be anything even remotely close to yours), but ouch, it was very cloudy here in Toronto. I couldn’t even see the light of the Moon. Grrrr.

But I’m enjoying in images that you and few others posted for everyone to see. It is really big treat.

Thanks again,
Alex.
