E550 talk

I can get the pics onto the computer via a program that was allready on there, but my camera
will flash "communication error" on the LCD.
I stumbled on this one, also. Pages 97 and 98 seemed to be the pertinent pages of the manual, but by jumping there first, I had the impression that there were only two icons to choose from when in fact there are three. The "web camera" mode looks like an unmistakeable icon, but the "DSC mode" and the "Printer mode" (the manual doesn't actually seem to have a name for this printer mode, just a tiny picture of what the icon looks like) are very similar looking to me at first glance. Since I thought there were only two choices, by process of elimination I selected the other one, wherein I kept getting communication error as well. Yet when I used image capture (a Mac OSX freebie) I could get the jpeg files to download anyway using the Fuji supplied USB cable. But the movie files and raw files were not recognized. (Since I'm on a Mac, I never, ever have plug and play problems, you see!!!!). My "out of the box" experience was so puzzling that I sent off an email request for help to Fuji. Still haven't heard from them, but did finally figure out that choosing the correct DSC mode icon solved the communication error problem. All files download and the Fuji software works well. Having said that, I just bought a PMCIA card adaptor for XD cards and I routinely use iViewMedia cataloging software so the fuji software, USB cable, cradle, etc., is largely irrelevant to me though many users will find it perfectly satisfactory.

However, there are a few hot pixels, even in the ISO 80 photo. I don't think the hot pixels will show up in prints, but perhaps they're the reasons why Fuji limited shutter speed to 3 secs max.

I just handled the E550 for the first time last Friday at Best Buy. The protrusion dimension of the handle grip is mis-stated on the Fuji web site. I probably should have known that it was a mistake, but the Fuji web site clearly shows the camera thickness including the grip, as 1.4". In reality, it's 1.4" thick, excluding the grip. With the grip, it's probably closer to 2" thick. That was a little disappointing for me as I was hoping for a slightly smaller form factor to replace my Olympus D-40z as a carry around camera.

But I will still consider the E550. The resolution appears to be excellent and the noise performance is very good. It's now available at Buydig for $336 net. Only wish the 512MB XD cards are a little cheaper.

Regarding the ergonomics, I actually didn't feel that comfortable with the placement of the shutter and the zoom control. To have your thumb on the zoom control while keeping your forefinger on the shutter felt a little uncomfortable to me. This didn't used to be as much of a problem for me, with cameras with the zoom control at the back. Now, I don't like the restriction on the right thumb placement, on cameras with this zoom control design. I think I'll go back to Best Buy and give it another try.

Do owners have any comments on the video quality? How's the sound synchronization on the videos?

It doesn't look like there's any noise reduction for the long exposure shots. Which some would think to be a bonus as sometimes the in camera reductions lose too much detail. Post reduction is usually a better way to go.

The grip measurement is actually 1 7/8 inch. The one fuji picture that lists the measurements puts it at 1.4" which is actually just the camera body. The camera isn't as small as I thought it was going to be either, because of the mis-information. But the overall performance and end result made me forget about that fact.

The reds seem to have died down with this camera also. Just noticed this, and am going to compare to the 7000. If someone is interested in this part let me know and I'll post a comparison of the two.

Low light in a darker room, having dark walls/furniture/etc., the camera had a little harder time getting a focus lock. The camera wouldn't lock focus as well, but when I took the picture anyway..... they came out fine. Have to try this out some more to see if it always still gets a good focus or not when it's not reporting a lock in dark situations. My old G500 would do great in these situations using a full press...... maybe Fuji has done the same.

The LCD doesn't boost up in low light area's to help see things..... couldn't remember if I'd put that in anywhere before.

Bradly, do you can make photo outdoor at night - in the street with many light buildings - night city. ? And morning city (with more buildings and may be river or sea)

Example Canon Ixus S400:

Example Sony DSC-F828:

Example Canon EOS 1ds:

Example Canon G6:

and make photo nightshot in the Pub, bar, restaurant with flash

Example:

Thanks.

Go down to the Detroit river, at night, with a nice little digital camera to take pictures of the buildings?????? hahahahahahaha :) That's a good one!

I'll take what I can and post them......

Sorry for the OT question, I made a search about the Sunpak DS-20 flash and saw you had one. Do you remember if it has a full power setting (AKA manual, the one that bypass the auto sensor) and if it locks to the hotshoe by switch or by wheel?

Thank you

It has 3 positions for use On(manual), auto, and slave.

It secure's by using a switch. Comes with a table stand that the flash mounts to and place it anywhere for slave use. There's a tripod mount on the bottom of the table stand also.

Detroit is a populated centre located in Michigan, USA. Someplace where you don't really wanna be alone during the night. I live in the rural outskirts close to nature area, so I'll travel around to a couple different places.

I'll get some populated centre images and movies with people etc. in them.

I'll download the T1 movie and see if I can get something similar to it, as far as the surroundings etc. On dialup right now, so can't download something that large. Work system is monitored, so I don't download things from there.
