E550 talk

NiMh batteries can be charged hundreds of times. I have some that have been around for years and still going strong. The camera comes with a 2-AA charger and 2-2300mAh batteries that charges in 3-4 hours. Has built in flip out plug, so no extra cable or anything. You take the batteries out and charge them in this charger. Or, you can purchase the cradle and just place the camera into the dock when you want to charge the batteries. The cradle comes with one of the NH-10 batteries for the camera.
my concern is the battery life, how many charges can you get out of
one set of batteries? Do you charge them while in the camera or do
you have to take them out to charge them?

Thx.

Bradly,

Thanks a lot for taking these pictures. I, for one, really appreciate this! The image quality really compares well to the 7000... Very impressive! Fuji must have changed something because the processing in the leaves is clearly different.. Much more detail in the E550 shots, as was already mentioned before.

There is also an absence of the green cast that is sometimes present in some of the 7000 (and the 602, as well) shots.

Can't wait to see this in stores locally so I can go and play with it.. really looks like a nice little camera.

Thanks again!

After seeing the pics Bradley took, and handling the E550 at Best Buy, I just ordered mine from NewEgg and should have it next Tuesday. It will replace a Canon S50 that my son borrowed and decided to keep. I have been looking at the Fuji S7000 but this looks like a better camera.

Anyone have any experience with E550 Raw yet?

Thanks.

I don't mean to upset anyone here, but how do the current owners of the E550 feel about its build quality? Because I've played with it a few times at Best Buy in recent days and, this is just my opinion, it feels a bit too "plasticky". I'm wondering why Fuji went with such a nice metal look on the F series, but only uses plastic on these ones, which otherwise are very nice. Disappointing to me, because I was considering this camera against a couple of Canons and the Casio P600, and all those cameras seem to be built much more solidly.
Again, I'm not trying to start trouble, just trying to get some opinions.

Thanks,
Brian
Not really sure how to work this thing as we just purchased it
today and I am extremely amatuer with photography (first digital
also). Having some difficulty with the software automatically
loading when I attach the camera. I have read that the XD
reader/usb thingy will solve this problem.

My first pic:

Glad it's helped you. The camera has exceeded my expectations. Hopefully they'll get some in locally for you to play around with soon.

I haven't done anything with raw yet due to all the complaints of the program that fuji provides. I'm eagerly awaiting adobe etc to update and accomodate the e550. I may try a few raw images tomorrow just to see what they're like.

Did you get the beach towel for your gift? :) I want one of those, but they put that up there after I ordered mine. I ended up with the charger, case, and battery combo instead.

What operating system are you using?

Make sure to go into setup and have it set for the mass storage(not the video mode).

Card reader is the only way to go in my opinion. Less chance of catching the cable and sending your camera flying for starters. Then I usually have too many camera's too. :)

Didn't get an answer in the Canon forum so I am trying the Fuji forum...

NEWB poster to dpreview but have been reading these forums for quite some time since buying a Canon S230. Looking to upgrade now, especially after dropping my S230 on cobblestone in France, and am having a real tough time deciding between new A95 or S60 or Fuji E550.

Really looking to upgrade to a point and shoot with full manual features (not ready for a dSLR); I really appreciate the swiveling screen of the A95 and do not really need RAW at this point; however, the A95 looks like a brick to me compared to the svelte S60. Fuji E550 seems to get good reviews from you guys, and I've played with it at BB, but the 3sec max shutter speed and xD card do bother me a bit, although the shutter lag time is much better than Canons'. E550 and A95 are both "plasticky".

Any comments/opinions are greatly appreciated in order to help me spend my next $400.

Thanx, Al

The front of the camera is made of metal(minus grip and other obvious things). Rest is plastic, rubber, etc. Doesn't feel cheap.... with things not meshing up well or anything like that. Doesn't cave in when pressing buttons or anything.

To me it seems to be well built, light, and it fits great in your hand.

I've had dozens of digital camera's...... this one's built just fine in my opinion and experience's.

Windows XP.

Sorry, but I haven't a clue what that means. I am a bit green.

I ordered a reader that should arrive next week so hopefully that will solve the problem. Spent all day trying to reconfigure the computer, but still to no avail. I can get the pics onto the computer via a program that was allready on there, but my camera will flash "communication error" on the LCD.

Going to Scottsdale next weekend, so will try to get some good desert shots.

A quick list of some benefits for the fuji....

Can actually use higher ISO levels.
Gives more wide angle and more tele range.
Faster burst modes available, but for less images.

Last 4 burst-saves the last 4 images when you hold the shutter down continuously for upto 40 images. Makes it easier to time things.
Popup flash, no accidental flash firings. (personal preference)
More white balance choices. (Though Auto works excellent so far.)
Better movie mode, not as choppy and not limited to short ones.

Speed wise I know the e550 is very fast. Can't say how the A95 is....

If the images did come over to the computer, then it's setup correctly in the setup. (It's the usb mode as listed on page 79 of the manual)

By chance are you using it plugged into a usb port on the front of the computer? It may need to be plugged into one of the usb ports that are in the back, coming directly off the motherboard. My portable drive is this way, for example, along with other mass storage devices.

Have a good trip, and we'll look forward to seeing some of your pictures.

I would also add that A95 also weighs almost twice as much as E550 and somewhat more bulky. That's a consideration, at least for me, in favor of Fuji.

The F series is the Fashion series. Get the F810 if this is important to you
and you don't want to use adapter lenses.
  • Ahh yes, not being released in the US! Well, there is a japanese company
that exports to the US.

I have seen references to a couple of free 3rd party raw decoders for Fuji cams and BreezeBrowser from Breeze systems now also does Fuji raw I believe. Will let you know when I get the camera.

Having come from the Canon world, I have come to appreciate the advantages of raw for critical photos.

If the improvements in the E550 are incorporated in the successor to the S7000, I may sell my Rebel and fully convert to Fuji. The Rebel is a real load to carry around and seldom find myself using all of its features.
