Some really nice stuff in your album Tels! Looks like a very interesting trip. Thanks for the link.

That's quite a collection, Tels. Enjoyed your variety. Hope the squirrel didn't bite! And the elephants didn't charge!

Looks like you got around quite a bit. Hopefully Sri Lanka is reasonably safe for travel now. Very sad state of affairs there over the last 20 years. But such a beautiful country, and such friendly people!

They are realy tame and always look for food. I saw them dig up larvae and slugs - but they really like toast. We had one slice wrapped in a very small blue towel - and once slice last a squirrel a week or so :) Interesting to notice that they figured out faster than I thought what the blue tower contained - a few minutes later one had entered the big bag and was carefully unwraping the towel :)

There was also the occasion that one of them tried to enter one of the drinking glasses - I could have caried it one because only his tail stuck out :)

Oh, and I forgot to post the picture with the coca cola bottle hehe
And the elephants didn't charge!
I was never in my life soclose to (sem-tame) elephants, with no fence in between. They have about 60 of them and you walk in between them - this is very cool and much better than a zoo :o)

Of course, I also forgot to psot the picture where they feed them - 1 1/2 litre milk goes own an elephant gut (a small one!) in about 6 seconds!

I think it is quite safe, and tourism is quite organized now (which also has it's downsodes). Unfortunately, people there are quite poor and in comparisation we are very rich, and this leads to the situation that whereever you walk/drive/appear (except maybe the hotels) that someone is trying to sell you something, or provide a "service" to you or just wants to talk to you. Even at the very aerly morning in a remote location you get some guy trying to sell you spices and postcards! sigh At some points I really thought about a t-shirt with only the text "No!" at the back and front. I am really not the guy who likes being aproached by total strangers and asked a lot of questions etc, espially because you always have the feeling they just want your money, anyway.. :/

But it was quite an experience!

Best wishes,

Good stuff Tels. That was very brave of you. I have two Sri Lankan freinds here in Silicon Valley. One was advised by his father not to visit yet. The other one was forced to visit last month due to his ailing father. Hope the situation has improved already. I will look some more at home as the server seems to be slower today (probably at my end).

I was there in 1984 as an independent traveler, low budget. There were bombings, but I felt mostly safe. Yes, people were very poor but I didn't feel exploited or unnaturally approached for money. It could be different now. What a remarkable place. Thanks for your images, Tels!

I don't think there are bombings nowadays. The country lives from tourism to a great deal! There are northern parts were you are adviced "not to go to", but most tourism happens around the south coast and the inner parts in the highlands.

Currently the country is a mix of ultra-modern (2x2m big ads inmidst a tea-plantage, guy in suit talking on his mobile phone in the middle of nowhere) and poor (most people living in poor conditions, including some of them without electricity or water from pipes) plus some very old and great culture heritage things like the budgha temple etc. Also, religion wise, they are very liberal, a mix of different religions living next to each other - hindu, budha etc.

The only "problem" now is that everyone spots you as a tourist from like 3 km afar :-) Ok, it could also be that at this time of the year there are few tourist so business was slow so everybody had a go at us :) OTOH, people are very friendly and if you ask for anything, they will help you (like providing power outlet for my camera at a restaurant so that I could top of the batteries - I totally forgot to take a photo there or ask for their card :-/

This is in contrast to other countries (+cough*germany*cough*), were you ask for something at a public restaurant and are sometimes treated like you just asked to steal a cow and shag their dauther on the way out :-/

Thanx for looking gil. And I don't think it was brave - the warnings are probably overrated :)

Cheers,
