--My Grandson and I each carry a GPS, and an FRS radio when We go trekking, I usually get left far behind by those 12 year old legs. Simple to find each other that way.

There is a software freeware at http://jdmcox.com/ that makes things even better. If I mark a point in the GPS when I take a shot, I can then go to where the subject was, mark another point, and when I get home it is a simple process to interface the GPS and the computer software, load the collected points from the GPS, and get a very accurate readout of any point to point distances. How accurate? Mind boggling! Don't need a GPS to enjoy the software, You can find coords for any place in the U.S, punch them into the software, and start making maps from there. GPS just makes it more fun!

--I am a member of the Cache forum, but it just gets to be too much running around. Some of the caches, a lot of them, are just too hard for Me to get to. I use the map software a lot, to scout out likely critter hideouts. I usually have "Ole' Yeller" the Etrex, in My shirt pocket, and the GPS 72 in with the cameras. My work area glows through the night from all the little battery chargers, looks like the conning tower an a submarine. The map software is amazing, a lot of the time You can see individual houses clearly enough to identify. No more skinny dipping in the backyard pool Folks, Big Bro is watching!

can I purchase a decent gps (small) for + - $100 or how much should I allow?

I'd like a wristwatch size unit since carrying things in a bag is starting to curve my spine

--There are very small wrist watch size units, but I don't hear anyone bragging about how good they work. A basic Garmin Etrex lacks a lot of the extras, but as a very functional and reliable unit it is super, and will fit a shirt pocket. I bought Mine for $50.00 in a pawn shop, and they are all over Ebay, about $100.00 or less NIB. Magellan also makes some nice units, I just happen to be stuck on Olympus and Garmin like white on rice! Same with Jeeps, would not be buried in a Hummer, big ugly things! GPSs are a blast, gotta have toys to live! Like cameras, the advanced models have a steeper learning curve, but won't get You unlost any faster. Maybe I should add the Garmins and the Jeep to My Siggie!
