Hi,

I am finding a 37mm circular polarizer for my CP990. Any comment on the sony one? Are they multi-coated? I saw the one come with a two filters pack (one is a polarizer and another one is a protective filter). Are they worth to buy?

Also, I heard that the 37mm filter may affect the flash sensor. But some say it doesn't. Any experience on that?

Frank

Frank, I think it's a 28mm. That's what fits my 990.

You can MAKE the 28-> 37mm filter adapter into a flash suppressor, but by itself it doesn't affect the flash or flash sensor. You have to add a tab to it.

Goudie,

Thanks for the information. I will buy a 28-37mm adapter for the filter to fit it in. People always recommend to use a 28-37mm step up ring. I think it's better.

iNova,

Sorry, I don't get what's the use of flash suppressor for even I read the link. Can you explain a bit more?

Why don't you try the 28mm ones? Cokin has just released a 28mm circular polarizer, which should cost around US$20 or so.

Frank
Sorry to be so obscure. The worry that the 37mm filter holder will affect the flash leads to the idea that "not by itself, but you can affect the flash if you add something to the filter holder".

It assumes that you have a standard 28mm -> 37mm step-up ring. Once you have that on your camera, you attach a piece of white cardboard or plastic that is that tear-drop shape atop the step up ring. The download file will print out on a laser printer or ink-jet at the correct size.

Stick that shape on your step up ring and now slight turns of the ring will move the shape near the flash sensor and catch some of the light with each flash and allow you to diminish the flash beyond the range of the 990 (and since the 950 has zero flash brightness control, it is quite useful on these).

So it is the light off the back of this tab that controls the flash. But the fact that you have to go to these extremes to get that step-up ring to cause a change in your flash (the affect-the-flash idea) means that a regular step up ring has very little influence on the flash without the tab.

Did that help?

iNova,

Thanks for the details. But I have heard that the white small logo on the step up ring will sometimes affect (reflect some of the light into the Pseudo TTL flash senor) the senor. So would it be matter as the ring of the Sony filters are made of chromed aluminium?

Hi Frank,

I'm using Kenko 37mm Polarizer with 28-37mm step up ring (Included when I bought CrystalVue). It doesn't block the light sensor, it works good!

Cheers,

Frank, Martin, et al, I know there must be a reason to go to the 37mm filter, but I can't figure it out. Nikon and at least one other mfr sells a 4 filter set for about $55. It includes circular polarizer, a uv, a 2X and 4X neutral density filters. Perehaps you are looking for commonality with a filter size you already have?

I actually have both a Kenko (silver) and CKCPower (black) rings. Neither seems to affect the flash of my 950 (which is most sensitive to this sort of bounce-back).

One good reason to consider 37mm has to do with "other" stuff. DV camera, for instance. Settle in on 37mm and your next year's 5 megapixel cam might have some filters waiting for it in your camera bag.

And that set of Nikon filters comes IN the CoolPack. Isn't that still being marketed? Killer camera bag, filter set and battery charger+4 AAs all for $90 list price.

I agree. I bought the CoolPack. Great bag. Holds WA & tele lenses, rechargeable batteries and charger, car cord, filters, CF cards, mini-tripod, and other items.

Yea... iNova is right. Other than that, 37mm filters are more widely available, available in many flavours and a lot cheaper.

A question for iNova: what lens cap do you use if you use your 37mm filter? I'm looking for a 37mm lens cap, but up to now I can find none.

Check with ckcpower.com. They sold me my first step up ring and had the pinch caps for low bucks.

I'm sure it would be fine. Probably made by one of the majors, anyhow.
