Karthik: "may be it's a challenge for everyone to leave
constructive criticism for this image"
You may have something there, maybe one person should be nominated
in each challenge to post a truly awful image which everyone can
comment on! Or maybe that's an idea for another challenge: Post
your worst image and see who can criticise it in the most
constructive and helpful way! :)

:) i was thinking on the same line.. lol. wouldnt that be interesting?

it’s very cliquey here. Look up the page and you’ll see the names of
people that normally comment on each others images.
I don't think there has been one challenge where I didn't at least enter an image in exhibition and I am sure I have left comments in every challenge from the very first one and on... After a while, you feel you get to know some of the other regulars, through their images, captions and comments. Of course, there will be people that you feel more on the same wavelength with than others. Others, whose photograpic style and abilities appeal to you and/or you admire.

That doesn't mean I only leave comments on images from those people. Really, what determines whether I leave a comment or not, is whether I feel I have something to say. It could be a tip on how I think the the image could be improved - a reaction to a great photograph, or a not so great one. Sometimes it's less about the photograph, and more about what's depicted that provokes me to click on "comment on this image".

The word clique indicates a group of people who stick together and excludes others. I don't feel I am part of a clique - a more correct term would be a community - an open community that welcomes newcomers.
if you looked thru some of the older challenge threads and voting
stats you see the same people also voting for each other.
Like I wrote in my first paragraph, I think it is unavoidable that there are some people, whose photographic styles and abilities you will admire more than others. That said, when I vote - I convince myself - I am voting for a specific photograph, not for the photographer. If my vote was ever affected by who took a certain photograph it would be because I'd use a more critical measuring stick for the most talented photographers. We can't have Vikas or iso3200 win every time, can we?

I have to agree with Olaf. It hard to leave comments on all the shots especially with work, personal life stuff, etc. In fact today was the first chance I had to even look at the gallery.

So I did take the time and post comments on everything in the eligible gallery with an ( ) next to it. I tried very hard to be constructive and explain why I did or did not like the shots. I hope to do better in the future with commenting (I know I have not been so good at it lately)

need improvement. Once a topic is brought out of the galleries and into the forum, it invites more discussion. The forum is more active and more condusive to conversation.

Lonnit
It was always intended very much tongue-in-cheek, there's no way it
was ever going to be a winner. I agree, though, that if I'd managed
to put an iso-style spin on it, who knows, but I can only aspire to
that level of creativity!

To everyone who has commented - thanks for taking the time! If only
I could gurantee that level of interest in all my images (though,
hopefully, the images themselves would be better) I'd be a happy
chap!

As for comments, they drive me nuts too. I'd love to see more
constructive critism than blank comments fields. I wish we could
institute an "if you don't have anything nice to say, at least give
some constructive criticism" rule. It'd do us all a world of good.
:)

Lonnit
lonnit :) I was just starring at this image and didn't really know
where to start just that I know it's not appealing to me. I agree
it's a good intrepretation of the theme. What will you do to
improve this image? I know a whole lot of folks thinking hey all
photograph doesn't have to be appealing. Don't know what to expect
in a photograph anymore.

may be it's a challenge for everyone to leave constructive
criticism for this image.

I think I noticed when you changed it the last time, only a few
minutes after you changed it, but I didn't notice this time.
Yes, you did! LOL! I only changed it 2 days ago. You're the first to comment even though I had even posted it on a thread! LOL!
to say, this picture doesn't look so much like the other pictures
of you I've seen (that's neither good nor bad, btw).
I do know what you mean. For example, I don't know where it came from but that is NOT my nose! I hate my nose; it's pointy and from the side has a bit of a hump. The woman in my sig has such a nice nose and I'm rather jealous of it! LOL!

There are several people who's work I adore, such as Vikas, Iso, and Paul Sumi. When we vote in the challenges we don't know who is voting for what until we submit our votes. I often see that the shots I voted for were also voted on by Vikas, Iso, and Paul. It's just a matter of taste. I like thier styles and I find that they are also the one's that vote for me, when I do get votes. It doesn't surprise me b/c our tastes are similar, although they are leaps and bounds more talented and experienced than I. There are some people that never vote the same way I do. There's no conpiricy, it's just that tastes run the same.

A perfect example is that Angela and I are frequently complimenting eachother. I have, several times, been told that I have a similar style to her - that I'm a green Angela. We're bound to agree on things frequently b.c. we have very similar taste.

I happen to like everyone here but of course I, pardon the pun, click with some more than others. That's just chemistry. Friendships develop. I can't imagine there's some private emailing going on behind the scenes, plotting who to boycott and who to comment on. If there is, they certainly left me out of the loop! ;)

Just relax and have a good time. Hey, I've been begging people to criticize my stuff, and I can't get that out of them either! LOL!

Warmly,
Lonnit
Can anyone explain the current dearth of comments?
I don’t comment that much so would not expect that many comments on
my images – things like this are very reciprocal. I do however read
most comments and I have to say that to get comments the image
normally has to be very good or you are part of the clique – it’s
very cliquey here. Look up the page and you’ll see the names of
people that normally comment on each others images. I am in serious
danger of stirring up a hornets nest here but I continue anyway -
if you looked thru some of the older challenge threads and voting
stats you see the same people also voting for each other. It’s
human nature I guess.

Now I’ll put on my hard hat and wait for the fallout J

Yes you need to be logged in. I sent you an email last week
regarding this. Can't remember which address it was. Obviously the
one you don't check much! The email explains things.
Last week, eh? I did a search and couldn't find anything from you last week relating to this using your normal email address as my search string. If you still have a copy can you resend it?

I seem to recall reading something on this forum about spam posts. If this is the reason for the change, I would suggest that it's better to delete such posts as they come up unless they become too numerous to manage. That doesn't seem very likely to me.

As it is, we can't get comments from people who are not members. This, I think, is a shame.

I found the email -- I'm taking the conversation to email.

I can see Nathan's hummingbird shot is clear winner!

But that's just me. :-)

Hi All,

Challenge 22 is about to begin but first I'd like to thank Karthik
for a very successful challenge and a popular theme. Many people
enjoyed the challenge topic "Head and Shoulders". The galleries
are filled with quality images and I enjoyed viewing everyone's
work. Nice to see quite a few new people entering the challenge.
Thanks to all for taking the time to comment on people's work.
Thanks for voting for my image of MacKenzie. I appreciate all of
the positive comments! I am honored to host Challenge 22.

Congratulations to Samuel Tran for your outstanding image in the
Exhibition Gallery. Very well done Samuel!
If you haven't viewed the galleries, please take a look at
Challenge 21:
http://www.pbase.com/cslr_challenge/cslr21_headandshoulders

Well Karthik, you are a hard act to follow but I hope everyone will
be open minded and consider the next theme:

Challenge 22: Flight

Aerial navigation, aeronautics, soaring, flying, gliding, journey
by air, aviation, fleeing, running away, soaring above the
ordinary, a set of stairs as between landings, a fleeing from
danger. You may interpret flight in any context you wish. As
always the voters will decide which images best portray flight.
The galleries are open and ready for Challenge 22: Flight.
I encourage you to comment on people's work. Challenge 22 begins NOW.

If you have any questions or concerns, please post them in this
thread.

Have fun and stretch yourself photographically. You might want to
try a shot you've never done before. I'm looking forward to seeing
some very creative interpretations of our challenge topic: Flight.

Best regards,
Roberta Fair

  • Login & password are unchanged from Challenge 21. New
contributors should email the moderators at pass(at)imageattic.net
for these credentials. Please allow a few hours to receive a
response.
  • Please ensure each image includes your name, a unique title, the
camera with which it was taken, and (for Eligible entries) the date
on which it was taken. Also, feel free to share your shot set-up,
post-processing details, and the like with your colleagues.

  • Please respect one another’s work. Do not delete, move, or
otherwise edit other entries. Please respect the first-come,
first-serve sequence of the gallery. You may update your images
in-place, provided that the subject matter and general treatment

Edit Image page).
  • If you need help in uploading to PBase, an additional help page
is available at http://www.imageattic.net/pbase_howto.htm * Image
by image, please share your comments with your colleagues.
Challenges reach their full potential when the dialogue becomes as
important as the images themselves.
  • Those who prefer more plainspoken and critical comments on their
images should mark their title(s) with an asterisk ( ).
  • Voting for your own images is forbidden. Who wants a hollow
victory anyway? :)

Not the time for politicking yet. I agree that the hummingbird shot is a great one and a rare find, I'm not ready to call it the winner. There are several others I quiite like as well and they keep coming in. "you never count your money while your're sitting at the table..." You just might be surprised at the result (although I'm sure the hummingbird will place well.)

I assume Doug Diamond is the aritist name.
I think we already established the identity of Doug Diamond. Only trouble is, I suspect he's not used to that name himself and therefore we don't get any response when we call out that name... He seems to have moved on to another and better name: Viewfinder - am I not right?

...cos it's Saturday morning, I am at work on my own, bored and finding ways of making the time fly by til mid-day when my weekend begins!

I am absolutely over the moon with the comments both my eligible entries have recieved. Thank you all very much!

For some challenges, I struggle to find a suitable subject and when I do, it's often an unwilling, impatient model, or a lacklustre subject that I have to find ways of making it look creative......or the ideas just don't flow like they should.

With this challenge, I found a subject that interested me, was invited to take a closer look, and fell in love with this wonderful old plane. While I was framing and composing shots, my husband (who knows more about old planes than anyone I know) was ooooh-ing and aaaaah-ing at the construction, and commenting on how different the DC-3 is from modern planes. And he was enjoying himself immensely, as was I. And it seems to have transferred itself to my photography.....because I was having such a good time, I seem to have come up with better photos.

Does anyone else find that? If your subject is boring/bored/unexciting and your heart isn't in it, it shows in the end result......and yet if your emotions are stirred and you take a real interest in your subject, you raise your own personal bar.
