Hello all,

Hope no one is offended. I just see John down under here more frequently than Niamh and Klaudio who created the site I'm referring to in my request.

I created a banner as you see but I’m having trouble figuring out how to link it to the Faq page. I’m currently signed up with Photobucket. Would anyone be willing to help? I’d greatly appreciate any input. Also, do you think the banner is more attention grabbing than just text and a link? It seems to me that it would grab the attention of the reader and reduce some of the commonly asked questions on this forum. I don’t really want to ask too many questions since my real inquiry is how to link it directly to the Faq page. My plan is to put it in my sig. line.
Thank you,
Robert

Hi Robert,

Thanks for supporting the FAx!

There is no banner visible in your message in my browser (or better a completely white banner, but the controls for zoom img etc are all there).

Havng a banner is just like linking an image, but you do it in your signature.

Now I'm sure if it is possible to make a direct linked banner ...

As for my personal preference, I prefer pure text signatures....so you better wait for answer from John ;-)

Klaudio,

Thank you for responding. It's strange that it's not showing up for you. I can't help but wonder if it's not showing up for others as well. It's obviously in my cache so it would show up for me everytime until I cleared it.
Does anyone see the banner?

Thank you again Klaudio for responding. I do support the FAx BTW, or I wouldn't have promoted it for months the way I have in my sig. line or gone through the trouble of creating a banner for it. A 10 minute job that of course could be improved but still, I'm grateful to everyone that's contributed to the invaluable information provided. I'd just like to share what you and the others have taken the time and hard work to share.
Regards,
Robert

G'day Robert. I like your banner, although I would suggest making the file a bit smaller if you can. Perhaps keep it to 20kB or less rather than about 50kB as it is now for the sake of dial-up users. I've got to catch the shops before they close in a few minutes, so I'll have a look when I return. Off the top of my head, I don't know whether you can create a link from your pic in a dpreview message, although it's not hard to do it in HTML on a normal web page.

G'day Robert. I've played around with dpreview messages and some simple HTML code with no luck. I don't think it's possible to do what you are after. Although it's not as elegant as what you are after, your next best option might be to use your logo with the URL beneath.

Feel free to e-mail me if you want to bounce any more ideas off me.

Thanks again for your support for the FAx. dpreview didn't ever respond when I e-mailed them about having a link from their Learn section.

John,

This is about a 23.5kb image. I don’t think the quality suffered that much but per your request I reduced the file size.

What prompted me to do this was a recent thread concerning people putting text in their sig. lines that had nothing to do with what others were searching for. That is, listing equipment the owners had and when a search is done, it pulls up all posts that have nothing to do with the query (such as those that like to list their photography equipment in their sig. line). Creating text in an image however, would never come up in a search.
Of course, I’ve never been guilty of that as my equipment is fairly limited:).

Your opinions are greatly appreciated and if you have any suggestions for improvement, I would be grateful. I stated in one post that it was a 10 minute job so obviously I could employ a bit more creativity. Of course, if you don’t like my idea or feel I have done anything inappropriately, I’ll stop. I have just found the information you all provide very informative and that everyone interested should have access to it so I wanted to promote it. Having been in advertising, I know for a fact that a picture speaks a thousand words, especially when the printed material included is straightforward and honest.

Assuming you feel the same, leads me back to my original question. How in the world do I link an image to your site? I know html but it doesn’t apply here on dpreview.
Regards,
Robert

Hi Robert
Cannot answer linking question.
Banner showed up fine here.

It would be easier to read at first glance if the flash was behind the camera and the text was on solid blue.
Overall, very nice idea and work.

Dennis,

Thank you for your kind words. I’m always open to helpful advice such as yours. This was a “quick and dirty” attempt that took about 10 minutes. MMmm, solid blue. I’ll have to mull some of your ideas over because my rational (as inexperienced as I am) was to create a fading background with the camera being on the lightest side of the blue in order to accentuate the actual product (being the camera). I used white text “across the board” in an attempt to provide clear readability and a good contrast. I put the “flash” which was actually just PP camera flare in front because I thought it enhanced the image a bit.

I may be wrong on all counts. That’s why I appreciate the helpful advice that you’ve given. I hope others contribute as well because I will never claim to be an expert:) but will always be grateful for critiques such as yours. I do appreciate it.

Just out of curiosity, was it really difficult to read? My attempt was to make the colors compatible with one another but still show a fair amount of contrast between them. Well, I'm still learning:).
Thanks,
Robert

Robert, I agree with your reasoning and I think it works very well as is. The text is very easy for me to read and the flash is in the right spot to indicate that it is coming from the camera. Behind the camera would not seem to make so much sense for me.

Hi Robert,

It was my proxy server that prevented your banner to show up. I filter out most of the advertizing in Web sites, pop-up etc, but normally it does not effect pictures. Anyway now, that the image is cached I can see it even if I re-enable.

Apologies for the false lead

Claudio

I find the flash distracting, so I wouldn't have ever read the text if I hadn't been reading the message - it looks too much like an advertisement to me. And there is nothing to tell me it is the MTF faq you are linking to.

By the way, I like having the links in your text signature - I've even used them on occasion as a quick way to get there without using my bookmarks.

Just my two cents.

Lynn

Lynn,

You stated “And there is nothing to tell me it is the MTF faq you are linking to.” That was true until I changed it, so I just wanted to let everyone know you were correct about the original banner that you were of course referring to. I changed it because some of the wording was a little off. Thanks a lot for your input.

I’ve decided to scrap the idea for a few obvious reasons brought to my attention:

1.I don’t think it’s possible to link a banner directly to that page from this forum.
2.It doesn’t show up for some members (maybe because of the inserted text).

3.If I did it for the first link, it would only be appropriate to do the same for the second one and that would most likely make my sig. line longer than most of my posts. It would also probably give the impression that I’m advertising.

4.Some have indicated, as you have, that they prefer the text and link as opposed to a banner.

All of those reasons combined, make my original idea unfeasible but I was just playing around with the idea anyway and all the feedback provided was appreciated. I didn’t change the image much since that would give the impression to some that the responses were inappropriate. This banner isn’t the best but I hope no one minds that I took a few minutes to change the text slightly (so slight that it wouldn’t reflect negatively to any comments other than Lynn’s and I’m addressing that here). You may need to hit “reload”, “refresh” or clear you cache to see the slight change made.
Thanks again,
Robert

Robert,

It's a pity you can't link from a picture as I think your banner is great. I'm particularly impressed that it only took 10 minutes (+ a bit of text tweaking later).

I have one small suggestion with your sig block if you're interested. I like the way you list what's the the main mtf_foto_studies galleries in much the same way I do, but I think it would be better to say Challenges rather than Challenge Rules as the Challenges are the big thing. The Rules are subordinate to the Challenges and people can readily assume that they are in there anyway along with the Challenges. That's just my 5c worth and probably of no consequence whatsoever for anyone looking to follow your links. Also, if you don't make that change, then what do you have to show for this thread?! LOL
