105mm 2.8 EX DG - Anyone have?

Laurence had tested, from what he said it is the same, I think the differents are in coating...but that's second hand info...someone said Sigma would sell to you direct why not email them and see what they say.

Where to buy?
Is it sharp, as 105mm without DG ?

Didn't you just shoot the new 18125? I thought I saw some images on your site. I just finished shooting it. If that was the lens, it looked like your copy did better at the longer focal lengths than mine did. Not that mine was bad, overall, I really liked it, esepcially under 70mm. I also shot the 2460. I don't think it is quite as good overall as my 2870 and it was REALLY soft at f2.8 at 50mm. I like you choice of images - building and signs and roads and wish I had that here. I keep looking for better examples to shoot here in Hawaii.

I have some kit lens comparisons also...the 55200 is a great buy for the money.

Hi rick

How are you?

5 hours ago,I put the link to your LENS TEST in my LENS TEST page as
you have done.

About 18-125mm DC, you can see the result in my site. Not so bad,
not so good. As the range and price of this lens I should say "enough
quality", however I cannot say "strongly recommend".

My 24-60mm F2.8 EX DG, I decided to buy because of your sample at
Las Vegas, is checked one.

When I get a new 24-60mm F2.8 EX DG, the quality of the lens was not
good as 28-70mm F2.8 EX. Then I asked SIGMA to check the lens.
One month later they send me the checked one. It was much better
than before. One of the best lens.

My test is done on long distance, and always try to compare with other
lenses, because I don't trust my memory, and I don't know how you
look at the image on your monitor. I'll Keep this style.

And I also like your style, too. Please keep your style.

Any request?

Only request I have is....you wouldn't happen to have an extra 300-800 you don't want would you?

BTW: I thought your 18125 looked pretty good at 125 although it is hard to judge once jpeg conversion is done and compressed. I am buying one for my trip to Photokina and Paris (compromise with my wife)!

All my images in LENS TEST, I don't use jpeg output bofore combine.

Usually I convert all images into jpeg to compare the file sizes.

When you convert images which are captured same scene in jpeg,
bigger file size means sharper picture. Then I select the sharpest
image.

And convert them into TIFF. Open all images on Photoshop and
trim to half or 1/3 size and combine them.

And "save as..." in jpeg. There is no re-compressed image im my site.

And I'll try to get 300-800 to test, but I cannot promise.

IF you want check my images for 18-125mm DC. I can put X3F files
in my site, and I'll let you know URL for download.

Thanks Kazunori...

I generally save everything as tif until the last moment but have a few images that were saved as jpegs and then opened and pasted. Even 1st generation JPEGS lose something.

Thanks for the 18125 offer. I am satisfied with the tests I have done and will buy one soon.

It would be great to see some 300800 tests.

Keep up the great work - let's see, have you gotten the 1850 yet?

18-50mm F2.8 EX DC will be available at the end of this month in Japan.

Never seen yet.

I'll try to have a chance to test it.

Pardon me while I jump in with my 2 cents worth....

I see a noticable difference in the house shots at both f/2.8 and f/4, -the second set (new lens? - in the closeup set above it the two columns of photos are labelled unambiguously "o" and "n" and the old lens is on the LEFT, so we're assuming it is the same way for the photos of the house). The stucco does look softer, and you see less wood grain detail in the timbers at the left front edge of the roof.

At f/5.6 and f/8 up its closer, -but I see a tiny bit more fine detail in the "a" set of photos from the old lens. Not a big difference, but enough that given a choice I think I'd opt for the old lens (which appears to peak in performance at f/8). By f/11 both lenses look even closer, -but I still might give a slight edge to the old lens.

Of course, since the differences are small they could be due to either or both of these reasons:

1) Manufacturing variance: The old lens could be a particularly "good" sample, or the new one could be a "not so good" one.

2) There could be a slight focus error in the "new" lens series, although the fact that the house is a distant subject (although probably not quite near infinity focus) should help compensate for that. But since you can still see some difference at higher f/stops (where depth of field should cover up any small focus error), that probably eliminates focus error as a possible source.

I was ready to buy the 105 macro when the new "DG" version was announced, and I held off buying to see what the new lens was about. Now that I've seen this test, I'm leaning in the direction of buying the old lens anyway.

Again, just my 2 cents worth....

Arthur
Laurence,

Is it my imagination or in the pair of house shots at f2.8
(IMG00435a28.jpg, IMG00441b28.jpg), that the second picture (the
"new" lens?) is quite a bit softer (look at texture of the stucco).
