Well, today was the first day I went out for some serious macro shooting. Here are some of the results. As always camera settings:

300D, Sigma 105mm f2.8ex macro lens, canon speedlight 420ex with lumiquest softbox. I shot handheld and mostly in manual mode. I also installed the fireware hack and constantly tweak flash exposure compensation for the shots depending on the available light.

That's some serious shots indeed, LOL !

Tell me something, I got the same lens, flash and softbox as you now, I love the combo. Most difficult part is like you, playing with aperture and FEC to get the best combo possible. Now the question is, apart the ever quest to get everyting perfectly done, which I think you master the whole aspect is...

How do you focus manually when there's so little to differentiate at low light level ? I mean it's obvious you nailed the focus on the dragonfly eyes perfectly. That's something I wish I had better with the camera. Heard the 1D Mark II viewfinder is better in this aspect, being able to focus better for macro shots. Are you shooting under bright sunlight exclusively ?

BTW Rich, while you were on vacation, I posted this message, hoping to get a reply from you :

Tell me what do you think, you can reply here if you prefer, no biggie.

I've had the 105 / 420 / softbox for 2 weeks now, simply loving Macro, it's a new challenge indeed.

My gallery so far, if you can take a look :

Your macro shots continue to inspire. They're really nicely lit....I think this may be one key to why your macro shots always have that pop...a vibrant look. That's some great detail in the eyes and it's well exposed too.

Those critters always seem to fly away when I get close to them. The clarity and enlargement of your photos are incredible. I'm amazed that you didn't use extension tubes to get that level of magnification.

Please, keep up the good work!
