How many lenses do you own

18-55 kit
50 f/1.4
28-135 IS
24-70 f/2.8L
70-200 f2.8L

This summer I've only been carrying the 24-70 and the 70-200. I'm going to give the 28-135 another whirl. If it continues to disappoint, I'll find a new home for it and get a prime, either the 85 f/1.8 or the 135 f/2.0. I need to really evaluate how I'm going to use it.

...and also these other lenses the fisheye took a picture of. What and how many they are isn't really that interesting IMHO, I leave it to anyone so inclined to count and to identify. :-)
How many do you carry with you?
I carry as few as I dare for each outing. I try to limit myself to three lenses or so, to minimize the weight. What lenses I take depends on the type of photography - nature, sports, low light, all bring different choices. I'm spreading myself (too) thin over all sorts of subjects, I wish I was more specialized or focused so I could get rid of half of my gear but I still want to try it all. Maybe I'll find my niche some day.
So what's in your wallet, errr bag?
What's in my wallet is one enormous hole, and a few moths. I don't plan any new lens purchases for the forseeable future though, I'm very happy with this set, they will be much better than I am for many years to come. :-)

I have 6, not including the Canon 2x TC II. The body is a 10D. Here are the lenses, in order of acquisition...

1. Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II - wonderful reversed on a G3 and okay reversed on a 28-135/10D for macro photography. My fastest lens, great at night. I don't like the bokeh, so I don't use it when that's important.

2. Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM - ultimate general purpose lens for me, although I'm using it less and less in favor of my other lenses.

3. Canon EF 20-35mm f/3.5-4.5 USM - a big step on my quest to go wider, and currently my fastest lens from 20-28mm (great, but not fast enough a lot of the time)

4. Canon EF 100mm 1:1 Macro f/2.8 USM - originally bought to photograph slides on a light table (great results, really, but, on balance, I should have waited until getting my film scanner (Nikon LS-4000)). Recently this lens is used less, but is wonderful for flower closeups and sports, if you can manage with the fixed focal length.

5. Sigma 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6 HSM - perhaps the final step on my quest to go wider - wonderful for architecture in tightly packed spaces and landscapes. Interesting and useful as an indoor lens in tight situations (or to enable an interesting perspective on large group photos), but it is fairly slow and often needs flash, unfortunately.

6. Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM - bought about 2 months ago with the intent of doing more sports photography. I haven't done much of that, but it has done an outstanding job when I have used it in this area. Very good for portraits and closeups at botanical gardens, and excellent for some extreme closeup/specialty shots with the 500D (enables tiny DoF). With the 2x TC, I'm happy with its performance for sports when you must be fairly far away.

My next lens will be a fast, wide prime. I've been discussing this with a few friends and have been getting some good advice in another thread here over the last few days. The Canon 24mm f/1.4L is the current front runner, but the Sigma 20mm f/1.8 is a serious contender.

Usually, when I go out shooting (always for pleasure) I take a single lens, but I will put 2 or even 3 in the camera bag in certain situations.

How many do you carry with you?

Since getting my 10D I was looking in my old camera bag. My old
heavy bag had a wide assortment of lenses (I got lucky buying my
camera used) I had all kinds of lenses, but when looking back I
pretty much only used my 28-200 and 50.

Now I am rebuilding my lenses from scratch. So far I have the
17-40L and 50 1.8. I am finding that I miss my telephoto, but it
is a tough choice. I think I will probably go with the 70-200L f4.
It is a nice compromise with size and speed. A 2.8 would be nice
but I just doubt I would carry it enough.

So what's in your wallet, errr bag?

For my 300D I've gone with all Canon:

20mm 2.8
28-135 IS
70-200 F4
75-300 IS

For my upcoming trip to Scotland and Ireland willl probably leave on of the 70's at home. Still trying to decide which one.

But I generally only carry two. Depending on what I'm going out to shoot that day.

I own 5 lenses and one TC

Canon EF 50 2,5 macro
Canon EF 35-105 F3,5-4,5 (on my EOS 10 film body)
Canon EF 24-70 2,8 L
Sigma 100 -300 F4 EX
Sigma 15-30 EX

Sigma 1,4 EX TC.

Wish to have the sigma 18-125 for trekking (I carried all the above lenses for trekking in the alps, and it hurts) and the Sigma 105 mm for macro.

I don't believe in fate, but I do believe in f/8!

Unless I want to travel light for a specific mission, I generally grab my entire MicroTrekker bag with this contents:

I'm fortunate enough (well...that's one way to see it huh ;)) to not have to leave any lenses at home as things stand, but the next lens will either require a new bag or me selecting which lens(es) stays at home.

Roger

Something less than all-of-them ;-)

This is what a lifetime of optical 'tinkering' will get you.
Man, why did you bring this up ;) , I had forgotten the other optical hobbies and collectable stuff I have stashed around here. Between microscopes, telescopes (all hooked to an SLR at one time or another) old cameras, etc, etc, man, that is a rather large load. I hope my wife never gets around to counting it all. With it spread around, on different shelves and cabinets in different rooms, she doesn't seem to notice what a large pile it would make all in one place...lol
