Pano: 7 AM hike in Marin CA hills (warning, lg pic)

That's a very beautiful panorama, Joan! You do have gorgeous
countryside right there in your own backyard. I am also partial to
the closeup of the Manzanita bark - great shot.

Thanks, Clint. I was going to get right up close to that bark, but poison oak intervened--used zoom instead.

Thanks Giles. I have been spending a lot of time in Mill Valley lately with a sick friend. Next time I'll grab some shots from her deck for you!

Thanks, Gerri. I am fond of that horse shot too. They looked more like ants to the naked eye. BTW, I loved your NYC shots. I used to visit there often, but haven't been able to get there in years. Wonderful place!

Got up early today to catch the morning light and took this small
3-segment pano. I realized that I have some beautiful country right
in my backyard--although Montana may be more dramatic. Fog was
still resting in the valleys.

Thanks so much for that comment. I admire your atmospheric work so much. I was unsure about this photo, but included it because it appealed to me--Thanks for the reassurance!

Beautiful panorama and a delightful series.

Brings back memories of a wonderful trip I made to Marin County -
Mt Tam, giant redwoods in Muir Woods, Stinson Beach sigh would
love to return one day.

Thanks so much. And I would love to return to your neck of the woods--that beautiful green countryside, the lake district, the amazing castles and churches. Ah well--at least we have this "travel" forum!

Hi David,

Thanks for the compliment--but this is only my 4th pano! The secret is Panorama Maker by Arcsoft (that came with the camera). It's so easy to use. Here is what I do (and what I should do).
  • I hand-hold my shots and pivot like a human tripod. I hope to get a monopod soon, but I never carry a tripod while hiking. Just too much of a burden.
  • I overlap way too much because of inexperience. I believe you need only 1/5th overlap, if that. I plan to do much better next time.
  • I was still in spot mode because I forgot to change. Next time, no spot mode because it's too easy to get too much exposure variation that way. Panorama Maker does compensate, but I make it work way too hard. I tried to even out the brightness in PS Elements--better to do it in the camera!
  • I believe I was in manual mode--but that might not matter one way or the other.
  • In Panorama Maker, you simply press Start, then follow the wizard. It's a bit like magic! I also tried the panorama tool in Jasc's Paint Shop Album--but it didn't work quite as well.
That's it. As I play more, I'll try to add to this list.

Great panorama Joan! I haven't tried one with my FZ-10 as of yet
and have no experience in the area. Would you mind providing us
with a short, written tutorial describing how you did it? Things
like equipment (I assume you used a tripod), exposure settings,
technique and post processing software. How did you stitch the
images together? Looking forward to your comments.

Just enjoying the light on the Manzanita branch . . .

Way in the distance were what I thought were cows--with heavy fog
behind them and the SF Bay in the pale distance. But I believe
they're horses!

And, of course, I ran into a couple of birds--bluebird and ??

I don't know what I'll do when I have to start back to work!

Thanks, Rich! I was just reaching for my Sibley's. It's such a drab little thing, I wasn't sure I could find it by browsing. That little tuft is telling, I guess. If your handle is jedibirder, you must know! :-)

Joan,

You have gotten some truly wonderful pictures! There is nothing
like a morning walk in nature's spendor to start the day.

The second bird you photographed is an Oak Titmouse. Below is a
link to more information on that species.

Thanks, Joan. We had a view out over the valley to Mount Tamalpais, and were walking distance to the Bus station, which is now a restaurant, I think! Can't remember the naame of the street, but could drive/walk to it if I were there. Look forward to the pics.

--Hey Joan what species is the poson oak? Is that the dark green tree in the big shot? If this scene had grey-green trees it could well be in parts of Victoria Aus! Calf and vic have similar climates too!! Has calf had any summer fires this summer?...Best Billy
