Foggy SF Bay Bridge from Above

Yesterday I tried to get this shot but the nice policeman said "NO PICTURES" and cited the fact that I was illegally parked. I couldn't agrue with that so I moved on. Today I went back because the fog on the bay was beautiful and I was hoping for a chance to shoot it. This time I stopped the car on the road directly over the bridge and shot out of my passenger window. After I took the shot there were 2 cars trying to get around me so I had to leave pronto.

This shot was taken at f13, 1/60th of a second with my Tamron 28-300 lens. I made a Dodge and Burn adjustment layer whcih I used to make the bridge pop a bit and the buildings in the background look more interesting.

That fog really is incredible sometimes... here is one I did many years ago.... have you tried to get up to this area to take a shot..??? :-) M

 
No matter how many times you do it, driving over the Golden Gate Bridge evokes emotion. You've captured a bit of that here. I lilke the "doctor" job because it enhances the moment you've shot here. Couldn't quite figure out which road you took this from. Glad you got the pix, not the ticket!

Thanks Beau. You cannot figure out which road I took this from because it is not the Golden Gate Bridge, it is the SF - Oakland Bay Bridge. I was on Yerba Buena Island over the tunnel that the bridge traffic drives through.

Nice shot M. The fog was cooperating with you. I don't think I've been to that particular spot. Did you have to climb anything to get there or was it near the road?

Nice shot Bruce... I can relate to the "no shots" routine... Our car got stopped by Homeland security (port authority citing homeland security) for taking a shot of the Lincoln Tunnel in NY... my options were delete the photos, or have the camera confiscated and be detained for hours while the reports were filled out... I deleted the photos. I understand the need but it's a shame :(

It was near the road...but... a long time ago.....don't know what that area looks like now.... :-) M

I think it is legal to take pictures of the bridge, they just didn't want me parked where I was. I guess I have to park down the road and hike up to that spot next time.

I am often hassled in downtown San Francisco for taking my reflection shots of the high rise buildings. Sometimes my photo shoots turn into some type of covert operation just to get the shot I want..

I am very hesitant to take my camera out in downtown.

So, what kind of hassles? From cops or from zealous guards?

I understand where they are coming from as well. I look very middle-eastern as well :( and that makes life very difficult. [OK guys, please don't flame me for this. This is the reality]

In general, I have gone into a shell when taking photos of public / famous buildings and that sucks.

This is Bay Bridge.

You drive on 80 East and exit Treasure Island. Treasure island has some gorgeous sights of the city, bay bridge, Alcatraz etc.

On the way back from Treasure Island, you pass over bay bridge from an elevation. You can not park there.

Actually, they used to let us on the other side of the bridge as well where is probably the best view of the city and the bridge, they don't let us any more. The "San Francisco Photo Secrets" book has a terrific shot from that location.

I hope you can come out of your shell in public spaces Anand. Unless you are doing suspicious activity besides taking pictures of public buildings, I doubt you will b hassled much more than I have been However, if you want someone to watch your back for the man while shooting downtown just let me know. I need someone to watch my back while taking my "Streets of San Francisco" shots because I've had too many close calls with cars. Maybe we should organize a downtown SF photoshoot for anyone interested. Would you be interested Anand?

When shooting buildings in downtown San Francisco I have been asked to stop 3 times. All three times I was on the property where the bulilding was (or on the sidewalk next to it) and all three times I was told there was no photography allowed on the premesis. When I crossed the street and shot from there I was not hassled about it.

A few weeks ago I was shooting downtown and came to a sign which read something like "the patio on the 6th floor is public space and is open to the public from 9am to 6pm m-f". When I went in to the building security stopped me and asked what I was doing. I told them I saw the sign and wanted to take pictures from the 6th floor. He made me show ID and then let me go. I got some great shots from up there and plan to go back for different lighting, fog, etc. I believe it is at 150 California St.

Actually, a few of us are going through a photoshop class in Michael Soo's (the guy who posted below, a great photographer - just that he shoots with a Canon DR :)) home this Saturday.

Yeah, need to break out of the shackles.
