Hi,

can anyone recommend a decent fisheye lens say (16mm) at a reasonable price. Preferably autofocus and D70 compatible. And whilst you're at it what about a 100-300 zoom. As usual - good quality, reasonable price.

Any suggestions appreciated.

For fisheye I think your only options at a reasonable price (depending on your definition of course) are the russian made Zolimar and Peleng brands. You can find discussions here on DPR and find them for sale at eBay and other places. If you want to go Nikkor be prepared to take out a 2nd mortgage on your house :-)

I believe sigma sells af fisheyes also. but yes, like the previous poster said, the cheapest fisheyes are the russian ones, but you loose metering.

I enjoy fisheyes so much, they are great, you get two lenses in one !!
Let me explain:

You get the fisheye effect which adds great dimention and effect to many photos and you also get a ultrawide angle if you rectify it with software, a VERY wide, wide angle !!

I own the 16mm and the 10.5 mm nikkor, they are the best, well worth the money.

With the 10-300 question, I would recommend the tamron 70-300 macro, it goes to 1:2 macro and it cheap and has great quality.

Good luck and have fun !!

You can get good and you can get cheap.. but hardly do you ever get good and cheap..

For the small price diff look at Nikons 16mm 2.8... It's 'small' - light - and fast. From top corner across frame to botom corner it offers a 180' fov. If held level gives flat lines (as long as your NOT to close to things).. If you are, then the world goes wonderfully crazy with distortions.

I found a used one in Mint condition, like NIB, but no box.. for $400. Had filters, caps, pouch AND papers... Sigma's lens is a large monster too.

My choice for tele work is either my MF older 300 f/4 or 500mm f/8 mirror. Both are Nikkors. My fav is the 105 2.5 MF Nikkor.

Just IMHO - but I dont put non-Nikon glass on my bodies other than 2 Meade telescopes.

Thanks, Bob - Unfortuately I have to moderate my spending for a while after the D70 and many sundries to go with it.

Look forward to the creative opportunities of the 16mm.

Liam

A small bit of info here on iNova's .net site -
http://www.digitalsecrets.net/secrets/FisheyeNikkor10.5.html

I've the D70 kit + 10.5mm DX fisheye and recently the 24-120 VR.

I must force myself to use the 120mm zoom as the fisheye is really my first choice!

I do not know of any low cost fisheye lens that will connect directly to the D70.
Could the Coolpix fisheye be made adaptable? Big question mark here.

Perhaps a used/refurb 4500 and the Coolpix fisheye would be cheaper than the D70 and the DX 10.5mm.

Liam,
You will need to get the Nikkor DX10.5 fisheye.
Due to the 1.5x crop factor the 16mm becomes more like a 20/24mm.

the first was stolen, and I abuse it by using it too much. I gotta give the other lenses aequal time! This one had been dropped, and bounced, knocked around, etc, and it is tough!

Darn if I'm not confused all over again. Are you suggesting that they guy lives in a house worth something south of $700? The Fisheye-Nikkor 10.5mm f/2.8G AF DX ED (what? no more letters than that?) is a $630 item on some Internet outlets.

Here's my take on that lens:
