Also be aware that you could be charged VAT on it when you return
to the UK, slim but possible. Post the reciept, instruction book
and other bits you would not take on holiday back home and lose the
box or post it back as well. Another tip is to take and old case
and lenses, if you have them, with you it would make it look less
like a new purchase.
I have done this with some lenses - because I think a lens is less
likely to need servicing within warranty.
On another thread here in the 300D forum people are just talking
about adding your gear to your household insurance... - here´s a
little tory what happened to a friend of mine :
He also brought a camera (a pretty expensive 3-chip camcorder) back
from the U.S., didn´t declare it, so it was MUCH cheaper than here
in Europe. He added his gear to his household insurance - and the
camera was stolen.
He thought he would get te money back nice and easy - but had to
find out that his insurance even told the tax people that he didn´t
pay taxes for the cam... I don´t know exaxtly how the story ended -
but he had to pay the tax plus some fine and had lots of paperwork.
What´s the point here ?
Option a) buy it in Europe - pay a lot of money
Option b) buy it in the US and "import" it officially -> you do not
save much money, still have problems with warranty, but no legal
problems (insurance etc.)
Option c) buy it in the US and just bring it to Europe without
paying VAT - save a lot of money (I would guess 25-30 % right now)
- but don´t tell insurance or anyone else.
I´m not telling what´s the best way - just know what you are doing
