Grey card

I recently bought mine at Dodd Camera here in Ohio, they have a website at http://www.doddcamera.com , but I'm not sure if you can order online with them. However, they had it right behind the counter. I would think you could order them from any on-line supplier (B&H Photo, Adorama, etc)

... if I am wrong.

As far as I know, we use White Card, to set White Balance (as name implies), well you may use any really white object you wish.

Grey card is used for exposure settings (%18 grey).

you can use anything that is white or grey, as long as it has equal RGB distribution.

I usually use a plain white envelope I carry in my bag because it was free and has worked fine for the few times I've needed it.

With bright white objects you also have to make sure you don't overexpose the test shot (check histogram). Overexposure will adversely affect the custom white balance adjustment.

The WhiBal system looks interesting and i'd like to give it a try, but at $40+$10shipping seems a bit pricey just for grey cards.

LOL I'm too much of a newbie here to correct anyone, but the otherside of the Kodak Gray Card is a White Card used for setting the white balance. I'm actually looking forward to getting an "Expodisk" to simplifiy the procedure.

Both the Whibal set and the Robin Meyers cards are made from plastic, so they are much more robust than a card that is printed on paper. Michael Tapes owns RawWorkFlow.com (and is the U.S. C1 support person) has posted that the Robin Myers card is made from the same thing that the WhiBal ones are. And that the Robin Myers card is as accurate. But... he says that you need different kinds of white balancing cards for different purposes, which is why they sell a set of different cards.

The part that makes these cards moderately expensive is they are really neutral, which means more stringent quality control when they are fabricated than normal plastic gets.

Look at this spectral comparison chart they did to test how flat different white balance cards are

http://www.rawworkflow.com/products/whibal/WhiBalCharts.html

Regular white paper isn't too flat. Nor is a regular Kodak gray card.
