Yosemite Series 1 pics

Graham

Yeah. The color photos lack any pop because after about 8 am through 7 pm, the lighting is very very harsh.

For the last shot, I bracekted the exposure so that I covered both highlights and shadows.

I then digitally blended them using Fred Miranda's DRI plugin. I tried the conversion to black and white in many ways.

Using Fred Miranda's B/W Pro as well as an action called "Yosemite Sky" (google it, it is available for sale for $5 from a UK web site).

I played with the image a lot. I think this was posted from the Yosemite Sky action.

I also tried a few different compositions for the same image and liked this one the best.

Wow Anand, some nice pictures you have there. The B&W especially is pretty striking. Seems like a wonderful place to visit.

My first set of photos from here:

The HTML link contains the EXIF, in most cases, it would be
irrelevant :)

First did the Vernal falls hike, even if I can not do any of the
hikes below, at least I can take a photo of the mileage :))

Comments, critiques welcome. It is very difficult to photograph in
Yosemite in this time of the year, particularly any time after
early morning and late evening. I have tried to work around high
contrast scenes by various means, any advise, critiques, comments
welcome.

Thanks Vinod. Did a bit of s-curves based on feed back and the photos pop out more now.

Thanks for the info, Anand.

The "Yosemite Sky" action you used seems to produce results that are really attractive to me. For £2.50, I think I'll have to invest!

Does the action work properly with 16-bit images in Photoshop CS?

The website, for anyone else interested, is:

It works on 16 bit images as well.

Also, I took your advise and added more pop to the color images. Let me know your opinion now :)

This plugin works very well when you have sky in your pics. For general B/W usage with lots and lots of control, I recommend Fred Mirandas plugin.

It has tonnes of options (not always a good thing :))).

When I saw "Yosemite Pics" in the title, I jumped on the thread right away. And I figured since I had seen some of your other images, they would be interesting to look at. I was a bit surprised that you didn't photograph at dawn or at least at dusk. Others have mentioned that the colors are a bit lacking, and you yourself say that the light was harsh in the afternoon. Why not photograph when you had good light? I don't know if you have other images from your trip that you didn't get around to posting, but I can't imagine making a trip to Yosemite and not waking up early the first morning before sun-up to set up the old tripod.

I did enjoy the falls image and the B&W halfdome image. Good work on those. Thanks for sharing.

Too close! Seriously, the deer was about 2 feet away. We saw it grazing by the side of the road whilst returning from an early-morning drive to seek out some good locations, so parked the car to get a closer look.

That shot was taken with my Pentax Z-1p and 24-90 lens. The lens was right back to 24mm, and at one point whilst I was composing, and waiting for the deer to stop moving, I had to lean back slightly (I was kneeling) because I reached the minimum focus distance :-)

I was concentrating on getting that shot for about a minute. When I'd finished, about half a dozen cars had stopped in the road to see what I was doing :-) A ranger happened to be riding past on her bicycle - she waited for me to get the shot, then scolded me. Apparently, the deer don't mind it at all, but the rangers don't like it when park visitors leave with injuries caused by something startling the deer when they are close to humans.

Glad you liked the shot and the gallery :-)

Definitely better :-)

The Tunnel View picture now feels like it has a lot more depth to it, which is essential to capture the scale of the scene. The others have also benefitted greatly IMHO. I sometimes overdo the contrast, but a lot of people like pictures that way.

I need to say it again - that last black and white picture of half dome with the foreground tree is gorgeous. If I manage to get to Yosemite again, I'll be trying to shoot something similiar.

My three tips for Yosemite photographers are:

1) Get up early and make the most of the gorgeous early-morning light.

2) Use a polariser almost full-time.

3) Buy "The Photographer's Guide to Yosemite" by Michael Frye (available at Amazon). This book is indispensible for anyone who wants to make the most of their shooting time at Yosemite.

Cheers,

Some real good series. Great job! Some blabber below:

The following looks good but needs a bit more contrast.

http://www.anands.net/photos/favorites/landscape/yosemite/vernalFalls/slides/DSC_4334.html

Having the tree in the foreground makes an excellent depth indicator for the rock face. I assume you are using polarizer for this and a few others below?

http://www.anands.net/photos/favorites/landscape/yosemite/vernalFalls/slides/DSC_4310.html

This is an excellent image because it indicates height of the falls, the grandeur of it and that's due to adding of scale (humans in the shots). The height factor is increase also when you use portrait mode. This shot is nothing short of excellent. You do need to sharpen it some and I think this shot woulda been a lot better in the evening where the sun is a bit behind you. As of it now, a lot of the rock face's texture is lost due to the large shadow casted upon it by the harsh sunlight.

Needs contrast...and color boost using ...say velvia actions but use of digital blend. Sharpen it some as well and you got a winner.

Very dramatic sky makes this image pop. Good job using the tree branch to frame the shot. It would be even more dramatic if the tree branch leads the viewer towards half dome. But as it is, it's great.

Well, you've outdone yourself. Are you sure you still need the photoshop class next Saturday??

You are courageous.

I came across a bear and a wolf within 20 feet (have photos, will post) and was scared.

Had rotten luck. During the first day evening, I ran out of gas and had to run to Wawona and get gas, got a couple of Half Dome from Glacier Point.

The next day, I got greedy and raced to Glacier point at sunrise, ended up in Tunnel view during sunrise and shot at the sun :(

Have more photos, will post them soon :)) I took lots of panorama photos and messed up most of them :( with a new tripod (and ball head). Pretty annoyed with myself now.

Will try all your advise.

The tunnel view image was done through blending. I will send a few across to you and you can use them to teach us blending :)

Yes, I was using a polarizer all the time.

The waterfall is the best as it shows the relationship between the people and the falls with the people being dwarfed. BTW the United Nations is having a photo contest - evidently they do every 4 years or so. The first prize is $20,000.00........yes 20K (American $$). They have links to past winners. This is the type of picture the judges seem to go for. There is some really good stuff on the site.

Almost immediately, you cross by this tree

http://www.anands.net/photos/favorites/landscape/yosemite/vernalFalls/slides/DSC_4310.html

and you watch this jetliner commit harakiri :)

http://www.anands.net/photos/favorites/landscape/yosemite/vernalFalls/slides/DSC_4319.html

and you are stunned by the scenery

http://www.anands.net/photos/favorites/landscape/yosemite/vernalFalls/slides/DSC_4312.html

and before you know (well your legs know!), you hit vernal falls

There was not much water (well only two falls had water :(.), so
the mist trail was a huge letdown.

Later during the day, the view from tunnel view (digitally blend

Much later in the evening, half dome from near the curry village
