I just want to melt my Coolpix 4500. Every time I use it it is getting on my neverves. Once I get my 10d I will need a small compact camera. I need something basically for snapshots. I would like the camera to be 4-5mp and have a good sized LCD. Also having it CF card compatible would be wonderful. Are there any cameras that can satisfy these conditions and still be under $450 and produce good pictures. I just kinda need a pull-out-of-my-pocket-and-take-a-snaphot kind of camera. A good video mode would be cool too. I looked into sony but they use their memory sticks and there is no way in hell I'm going to convert my storage medium. Give me suggestions. Tell me to wait. Just let me know.

Depends on what you consider small. Is the Canon S400/410 small enough for you? I find that while you can carry them around in a pocket, it isn't very comfortable.

Going smaller than that I can't think of any that use CF memory, most use SD instead. Some good options might be a Canon SD10 or Pentax S4/S4i. I have a Sony U40 and I find it great, I find that the shape is easier to deal with compared to the other cameras.

This is a good link that has a comparison of smaller cameras.

Check out the Canon A70. I think it's discontinued now but the later model should be just as good. I have a 10D and my wife uses the A70 and the quality of the images from it is 1st class. It's only 3mp but gives good quality 8X10s.

Best of all is image quality which really is much better than I had expected and really is about as good as it gets for a three megapixel compact digital camera. But better than all this must be the price. At the moment you can get the PowerShot A70 for under US$350 (under £300 in the UK), at that price you would be very foolish to not consider the A70, I could happily recommend it over any budget priced digital camera and certainly persuade those who want a '$200 digital camera' to spend that little bit more for the huge difference it would make.

Forget Canon. Hugely overrated brand. Buy a Kodak DX7630 - 6MP and excellent value!

Olympus D- series camers are easy to carrie around and still deliver good color, dynamic range etc,. not CF compatable but readers arn't too highly priced. --

Hi! I can suggest this: Pentax 555. It's fairly small metalbody an d 5 megapixels + 5 x Optical zoom.

You can either use it fully automatic or go semi or fully manual, if you like.

What is it you hate about your 4500? I'm thinking that is the digicam I want to supliment my D100 with. I have a CP950, but the battery door is broken, and once in a while instead of taking a picture it'll just drop all the batteries onto the ground. Very embarassing. The other thing that bugs me about it is the lag time and limited shot buffe3r. Are these also problems with the 4500?

I like the sound of this ... need to go play with a model and compare it to my pain-in-the-ass 4500

I just hate it to carry it by my "unit" when I go to concerts. It looks like I have little donny's disease or something . But seriously its lagging too much like when focusing, its auto white balance is next to horrible so I end up just using speedlight option. The camera also lags when it writes to the CF card, tho this is partially due to the crappyness of my CF cards. When I want to take snapshots it overdoes flash so everyone has a case of mad pink eye or everyone becomes a white overexposed ghost. Also I am getting tired of the limited recording mode when it comes to clips. I just want to get something smaller that can be faster, smaller, and sexier.

I guess I just grew up out of the camera. I serioulsy had it for about 20 months now. I want to get my 10D and a small compact camera and be ready to go. For its price the 4500 has alot of nifty features that are not standard. BSS, bracketing and other modes are crucial when you are not sure what settings would work the best for the conditions. The design too makes llandscape shots easy tho portraits are sometimes a biatch. You have to have a rally good grip on your tripod to malke the camera just stay put while you swivel around the lens.

Lag - I hate lag. I can't find them for sale anywhere anyway.

By the way, whenever I say I want something 'faster, smaller, and sexier', my girlfriend just smacks me before I can explain.

The only one with usable video capture and have CF memory cards are big :-(

Canon S1IS - 3MP
Fuji S7000 - 6MP
Minolta, Nikon and Sony 8MP bunch.

A Ixus 500 with good videomode would be perfect as a second camera :-)

Usable video capure for me is something like 640x480 24fps or better.

Unfortunate Canon is the only one that try hard to stick with CF card for smaller digicams :-( and they are the worst at video frame rates ... (except in the S1IS).
