I especially liked #32062580 & #32062584. Superb composition.
What an unreal place. I hope to see it before I...
Hey all,

just got back from my mini photo-vacation. Here's a couple with a

I just spent some time looking at your entire galery. See how some interesting shots spike the curiosity?

I really like your frames and how you include the text at the bottom. Is that a PBase feature or do you do that yourself?

Takes your breath away! :) Very nice work. Man, talk about being on the edge there! :) I usually scare everyone when I try shots like that, but it's worth it.

Gorgeous photos Eric. I never tire of seeing photos of Antelope canyon. I like the fact you included the movement of people through the canyon floor.

Was that your camera perched on top of the cliff?

well done.

Hi Eric, I am heading there pretty soon myself (in about a month).

In the Antelope Canyon, would you say a 50 prime is a good lens choice? Besides a 100 prime and a 70-200, I only have a 24 wide prime and a 50 normal prime and am trying not to change lenses inside.

I shoot film so don't have to contend w/ the crop factor...your opinion is appreciated.

BTW - great photos.

Beth,

I know what you mean! I was not sure I wanted to try and shoot the bend. Sitting in bed the night before I could just picture myself taking a tumble... man.... what would you think about on the way down? Ughhh...

Definately a place to take seriously. The minute you dont respect it is the minute it kills you.

It really is a strange/beautiful/surreal place. In some ways its like being in a cathedral of stone.

Thanks,

The frames are a photoshop action I created. I resize the photo to 600x400 then runm it. The text is added after the action.

Thanks!

did you visit Lower? If not, then yeah you would have missed it. Even if you did do thel ower canyon it would have been easy enough to miss. Its pretty high above your head and if you were concentrating on the pathway it'd slip right by ya.

Lucky for me, I didnt have to worry about the sand. There was almost no wind, and there just wasnt much sand in the air. This made it hard to capture light beams in Upper, but it was great in most other respects. Had it been dusty, my plan was to keep the camera covered at all times with a heavy plastic bag, taking it out only to shoot the image. I didnt change lenses at all except for one time in Lower. In Lower, there was ZERO dust in the air. I felt totally at ease changing lenses.

Eric
excellent photos eric.
I must have missed this spot when I visited the Canyon

What did you do with the 10D for sand proofing?

Hey Scott,

yeah its pretty intense, though I must say the shots that took my breath away were the ones when I was directly behind the tripod. In this shot I was in a much safer spot. ;-) I'm sure as soon as my mother sees that photo I will be getting a very interesting phone call. ;-)

Yeah it is almost cliche now to photograph the canyons. I dont care though. As soon as I saw photos from there I knew I had to shoot it someday. Its hard to get anything original, but it was still a great experience.

Thanks for the kind words!
wonderful work from an oft photographed area. any shots of this
stuff that hold my attention as long as yours did are worthy of
mention. fantastic stuff again Eric

Thank you for hte kind words. Yeah it is a pretty incredible place. I'm already looking forward to heading back there someday. Maybe in the winter though, so I can also see the Wave in Utah.

Yup, thats my 10D on the cliff. I shot that picture with my Sony 717. It was still dark enough that I had to use ISO 200, which is why its pretty grainy. (anything above 100 is pretty noisy on p&s digi-cams).
Was that your camera perched on top of the cliff?

well done.

well, I used the 17-40 f/4L (27-64mm equiv) the entire time in Upper, and for all but one shot in Lower. Personally I would not want to be stuck with a prime in a place like this. There were times I wanted to zoom in and others where I wished I had something even wider.

Especially if you will not be changing lenses (though with a film camera, do you need to worry so much about it?), I would recommend the 24. I think you will find you wish you had more reach, but more often I think you'd wish you had more FOV if you went with the 50.

I've decided I want a 17-200mm f/2.8L if anyone from Canon is reading this. I'd be willing to pay up to about $2K for it too. Shoot, I'd even trade my 70-200 f/2.8 IS for it if it was a decent lens.

I feel like I have seen these pictures millions if not billions of times.

Playing the advocatis diabolis, I would say that your pictures are very boring.

In the function of the constructive critic, I would say that overly photographed motifs have the advantage that it is rather easy to "shed a new light / give a new perspective" because viewer's expectations are so conditioned. The next time you stand in front of such a motif, I would spend more effort in trying to go beyond the typical postcard motif.
