Check the histogram- I suspect the highlights of the sunlight
glinting off the ripples on the water may be 'blown out'
(overexposed).

I recently took a photo on a wet beach which had a similarly
unreal appearance, though I rather like the effect. Is this a
rare case where overexposure is actually beneficial?

Small waves are reflecting sunlight in all directions, and wherever the surface reflects the sun directly into your camera, you see a bright white spot. Visually, this results in the glittering appearance of the water surface because the waves move and change their shape; the camera just freezes the impression at some point in time.

I shot this last year with my FZ1:

In this example, you can see the wave ripples at a much closer range, and many of the ripples account for bright spots in the photo, depending on the Sun angle.

Common when you're shooting toward the sun, as opposed to having the sun at your back.

You're right, Steve, and I think it can be a nice effect too.

Stop down the aperture to its smallest and try for the longest shutter speed possible and you'll get a different effect! ;-) try it!
