Hi all,

I lent my dad my digital camera and went to pick it up to find that he had left it in the car all week (I live in Florida). So I take it home and go to get the pictures and use the camera - and it doesn't work. It's still under warranty - but negligence is not covered...so I'm trying to figure out if the heat inside a car could likely have caused this. Thanks for any information.

Quite possible. The temperatures inside a car left in direct sun is way outside the operating range of a digital camera.

It also depends on where is existed in the car, direct sun or shadowed. In direct sun for long time in the car, there's no way to survive this...
In shadow, if continue turned off, maybe no problem...

Jake.

indeed, the temperatures in FL inside a car can reach the melting point of some of the materials used in many consumer electronics. this also sucks for the car.. i would buy a shade for the windows or leave them cracked. ouch...

Oh man, is Dad in trouble now! It is very possible leaving it in a car in the hot Florida sun killed it. How hot was it?

Amy,

I'm now thinking of the battery, which can't stand high temperatures for longer time. It can make corrode the terminals of the camera as well. Check the battery housing and its terminals. You can clean it if necessary with a fine glass brush. Can you measure the batteries, using a multi meter? Can you try another battery(pack)? Jake.
