No, I don't mean a card reader but rather a standalone unit that you can transfer photos to while on the road without lugging around a laptop.

Or is that a pipe dream?

yeah, they are called portable storage devices (PSD). there are a ton of choices to choose from. i even think there is a forum on this site dedicated to media and storage you can check out. i personally have a gemini 120, a portable 20 GB HDD with built in CF Reader.

l,

Do you mean, "is there a standlone drive . . .?

If so, yes there are several. I use a unit called the Aplux Tripper. It has in it a CF card reader and a hard drive. (Several sizes of hard drive are available in it - I have 40 GB!)

It has an internal storage battery and comes with a charger for it.

You can download the files from your CF card onto it. It makes a new folder each time you do that, and everything on your CF card goes into that. (You cannot be more selective). You can then clean off all files from your CF card. (Again, you cannot be more selective about that.)

Then, when you get back to "base", you connect the unit to your computer via a USB port. You can then access the hard drive in the Tripper to move the files from it to your computer hard drive.

When you have it connected to your computer, you can also access the CF card reader in it just as you could a conventonal CF card reader.

There are several other units that do essentially this, but their specific features differ. I'm not familiar with any of them.

Best regards,

Doug
