I've been shooting with a Canon s50 for the past year, which suited me fine, but now that I'm looking to go to photography school, I sprang for a D70. This is my first gallery of D70 shots, and I would really appreciate some critical remarks (so long as they're in good taste). I'm using a Sigma 24mm f/1.8 Macro Lens, and an old school Nikon Zoom 35-70mm f/3.5 that i ripped off my Nikon FM10. All of these photos were shot jpg, and then edited in PS CS. Wish I could embed the photos, but my site doesnt pu ".jpg" in the url, and this forum doesn't seem to recognize them wihtout the extension. In any event, I hope you like em.

I'm still using my aging s400 so i'm unable to offer pointers, but i would like to say that you have a very clear sense of composition and I loved all of them! keep up the great work!

On one hand, I was looking for critical remarks, but I guess a little ego stoking doesn't hurt, so thanks for the praise. Furthermore, I think I'll continue to post on dpreview... has ad newrly 400 hits in the last 12 hours, and unprecidented number, which goes to show what a lil forum exposure can do.

To nowhere: thanks for the photo reflection challenge idea, didn't even occur to me that I qualified...

To swingguy: are you refering to the dark pretty thing with the cell phone, or another lady in one of my many other galleries? If you wanna see a few "too hot to handle shot" check one of my older galleries: http://chuck.sadmensclub.com/gallery/album136/AshleyTouch

Yep, just that one! But I had looked at your oldest galleries too, I wanted to see the evolution of your photos, since I must be your age or so, and I started photography not too long ago, it is interesting for me to see how you developped your skills and how the artistic quality of your photos matured over the thousands of shoots!

I'll check out your sad friends' galleries now, that should keep me busy for a while...

Chuck .... I liked your stuff.... hard to provide critical comment on a large body of work that is so varied. Hope to see more of your work.

BTW, has the D70 made a difference in what you see and can convert to a photo image?

In a nutshell, the D70 is a tool, my s50 was a toy. I did use my viewfinder on the s50, but because I can't use the LCD at all on the D70 to compose, shooting has become an entirely different thing for me. Compostion has become easier, and though the "grid" doesn't align just right, it still helps, as does the usual Nikon read out below the actual image to be captured in the finder. What really makes a huge difference is the D70s startup time, and general speed of use (changing f-stops, shutter speed, white balance, ISO etc.) Moreover, the s50, as nice as it is, doesn't get the same kinda color balance as the D70. Basically, every aspect of the D70 is better, except for its relative size, but as far as dSLR's go, its as portable as the competition. I plan on keeping my s50 for rowdy mosh pits, but for everything else (including flying down snow covered mountains), the D70 will be at my side.

Chuck

Great work ! Very original, and pictures are very well composed and exposed.

The only small negatives are one or 2 architecture pictures could use a little perspective correction and .. the web site where the pics are posted is slow !

Thank you for sharing
Thierry

Hey Chuck

I haven't used my G3 since getting the D70 last month, but I do feel that people react differently (and I also behave differently) when using the D70. That changes the chemistry of social event photography... and semi-candid photography. Maybe I need more experiences feeling myself with the big black D70 and looking thru the lens at my subjects with a shutter sound and bright focus assist lamp highliting my intrusion into their conversations.... versus dangling the little toy G3 at arms length aimed with the twist of a wrist or shielding it with my body and shooting at right angles.

Going down snowy slopes however is reserved for my son's A300.

Cheers.

Perhaps I was answering the wrong question then, because I too have difficulty with candid/photojournalistic type shots. In fact, I've had to develop a, well, mantra of sorts... "Shoot first, ask permission later". It def requires a bit more cojones to shoot with the D70, and in that respect, shooting is certainly a bit more difficult than it was with the much smaller s50. But for the record, I don't even bother with the AF Lamp, way too intrusive, even amongst the best of friends... if the light ain't there, the photo probably won't be good.

Thierry, without sarcasm, I truly appreciate your negative comment. I agree, my architecture doesn't... "zoom," which I can only attrinbute to improper composition. About the server speed... I think its because the webmaster (my good friend Gary) has never seen so many hits in a 24 hour period... 800+, I'm lucky if I break 100. Thanks for the negative, but not unfriendly, words.

The real reason I'm going to school is cause I've seen photos that make my work look like a something a 2 year old drew with a crayon. Other reasons:

A) Regular University (University of British Columbia) has been a blast, but not because I'm an academic, they just have fantastic parties and laws in Vancouver. I need to have an excuse to stay in Vancouver, so I chose photo school ;)
B) Lighting Lighting Lighting... Gotta learn it somewhere.

C) I've only shot digital seriously, I imagine exposure to real film would only benefit my abilities, not hinder them. Access to darkrooms, both BW and Color will be a huge advantage over running down to 1 hour photo to process.
D) Connections... need I say more?
