embedded jpg inside raw

I have set RAW as main file format and have used cutome function 8 to include a small jpg with saved RAW file BUT when using Canon utitlity to extract the jpg file it can not find any included jpg and tries to convert RAW to JPG/TIFF!!! any idea whay is wrong?

Are you using Canon FileViewerUtility? As far as I know the jpeg can only be extracted using this software.

Go to: File(F) - Save File - Extract Save JPEG

Yes I'm using file viewer and the "extract save jpg " is disabled.thats why I send this post.

If you are going to use the 'RAW' shooting mode then I think that you should consider getting better converting software. The Canon software is just to limited and slow. I can recommend Phase One (LE version) as very good and you will like the easy way that you can use it. There is a trial version available on the Phase One website - give it a go and you will be amazed with your finished photo's. Also, getting at the 'embedded' jpeg file is a doddle with this software.

On the FVU screen click on the arrow beside the "common processing" window and choose "Eos 10D". You should now be able to extract the jpg and work with the raw photo.

Can anyone explain to me the rationale behind having a jpeg embedded in the RAW file? I usually convert to 16-bit TIFF for all my tweaking, so don't use jpeg until post-processing the TIFF, therefore I see no use for this "camera processed" embedded jpeg. Also think it would make the RAW files slightly smaller ir is it for the in-camera review function?

I have a Flashtrax that I dump my images to while I am on vacation. The FlashTrax will allow me to view the embedded RAW image. Otherwise, I think I might have gone crazy if I counld look at my images for 3 week while I was in Ireland.

You're right - the camera does use it to review the images on the LCD. I have mine set to the smallest size possible because it isn't much use to me otherwise.

Another use is if you're needing to make some really quick proofs for someone (or yourself). You can just use the embedded JPEG instead of converting all of the RAW files.

Also, in Capture One, the embedded JPEG is used for the thumbnail I believe until the actual RAW file is loaded.
