Hi all, I have never posted an image here before but just got back from holiday in Botswana, Namibia and Zimbabwe with my D70 and a brand new cheapo Sigma 70-300. I welcome all criticism.

Hey bob

You should post more! Took a little look at your July gallery and enjoyed looking at whats you've been up to. For me its not always about optimum optical quality and perfection, the subjects do it for me.

Its a nice little shot you posted there, cant see anything wrong with it at all. If you want me to be critical its maybe suffering from slight drop in sharpness possibly due to hand shake, was it shot at full focal length handheld? Did you manually blur the shot in PS too? It looks like a different type of DOF.

Still im glad you posted it, i enjoyed viewing! Post more :)

The only reason i say it looks like its suffering from a slight drop off in sharpness is because i photograph deer and i get the same type of look if i dont use a monopod, even with higher shutter speeds.

Can't offer critical remarks. It's an interesting photo, nicely done. Don't worry about not having expensive lenses and all that stuff. It's the photos that count, not the $ signs on your lenses.

Thanks for the comments. Yes, it was shot at 300 handheld. I don't carry a tripod so the best I can do is to try to shoot at high shutter speed. I didn't notice any blur in the shot but I'm new to this and I don't have a trained eye. Could it also be that the lens is just not sharp? (For $150 I don't expect miracles). I appreciate your input.

It's a bit daunting when I look at other members galleries, but at least I am satisfied enough with my shots to finally post an image after lurking for many months :-)

hey nice pic,

Plz post more pictures from you african trip that would be very cool. I've been to africa also but I had a F80 so it cant post any pics..

waiting for more..

Hello Bob,

I was also leery of posting mine here as well at first, or anywhere for that matter. When I got my D70 I believe my level of commitment to my hobby raised a notch (or two, or three lol). But in all seriousness, I look to post images that for the most part make me feel I am headed in the right direction, although I still pick them apart, I often find it difficult to see things from a different perspective. I believe this is what many people call finding your style, and then honing it. I am also trying many new things that I had not tried before as experimenting with my film cameras was costly.

I appreciate the positive feedback and the negative feedback equally. As without it I would still push my self to do better, but the ability on this forum to get "different approaches" to solving techniques that I am troubled with personally has been invaluable.

I think you did a great job with this photo, the composition is great in my opinion, the animal to the left, and looking back to the right across his/her body, and positioning the animal on the left, so it gives a sense of its viewing direction is great. The background although not really blurry (DOF) is good as well, it shows a sense of place, and also there is enough contrast to make the animal stand out, and yet show how they are able to sneak around as they are somewhat suited to the environment!

Thank you for sharing!
Best regards,
Thomas

PS I will be looking forward to more photos!

I like how it's almost monochrome, but the aardwolf still stands out, thanks to perfect focus (the back and front of the shot fades nicely into a blur). I also like the framing, with a lot of room in front of the wolf.

Looks like the cheapo Sigma 70-300 did fine. Bet you had a great trip in Botswana, especially since you had your new toy, the D70, with you!

The image looks slightly soft, but might benefit from more aggressive sharpening(?). Still, a very nice shot. Looking forward to seeing more! :-)

I took a look at your gallery and I think your shots are beautiful (not to mention the place you live). Particularly like the ducks. I'm new to bird photography and have quickly realised that I need either a longer lens or longer concentration span :-)

Just for fun, here's a very near miss of a fish eagle. Split second earlier and it would have been beautiful...

I haven't really had time to do extensive post but I will definately try some sharpening on that shot.

Only problem with my new camera is that I spend more time peering through the lens than I do really looking at the animals and enjoying the bush :-P
