So, I wound up buying three lenses because I couldn't make up my mind. I figured I'd make the bite and then I won't have to for a month of so...

I saved quite a bit of money, so I thought I would pass it on...

I searched and searched, looking to save money because my wife and I's anniversary is Wednesday and the gift I got her set me back a lot more than I would have liked... so, after all the research I found the first one, the Nikon 70-200 VR (I've heard you guys talk about it enough that I had to get it) from....PC CONNECTION! That's right, brand new USA version...for $1195! with $9.00 overnight shipping!

I've ordered from them many times over the years and never even thought about them for lenses, but I thought I'd give it shot because I saw that they were selling the Nikon D70. And they had it...actually, they carry a few lenses, but this was the only one I wanted from them. $800 less than Ritz Camera and $400 less than B&H. I couldn't believe it.. and the shipping was 1/3 that B&H wanted..

Then, I bought the Nikon 10.5mm fisheye and the Nikon 60mm micro from Abe's of Maine. Overnight shipping for these was $55.00. Both are USA, brand new, etc. I've purchased a few things from Abe's in the last couple of years, NEVER thinking these guys were out of NYC, but in Maine. (Yeah, I know...stupid). I've purchased a Pioneer Tivo DVD-R set top box and a couple of inexpensive digital cameras with no hassle, and they were fine, and just as I ordered.

Altogether I saved more than $600 from B&H, god knows how much over Ritz. So, if anyone has been putting off the 70-200 because of price I don't think you'll find it for less than $1195 USA-brand. In fact, I kinda expect them to email me and tell me they made a mistake.

I have PC Connection on the phone right now and they are not showing it. I need a part number. I need more information. Telephone #, ext, etc. The man that I am talking to right now can't find that they sell it.

That's the only lens in the range that showed up when I searched all products for Nikon.

John,

You had better ask them again before you invest $1200 on that lense.

This is not a good way to make friends on a forum :-( I do apologize for the mistake, I swear I thought it was the 70-200 VR... I called and canceled and the guy asked me if I posted it to a board somewhere because he had had 3 calls in a matter of minutes...

I'll go hide my head in shame now..

That is why I always do my homework. My goodness. I had the guy on the phone ready to make something happen. What a mistake. So much for that idea. If it seems to good to be true than it usually is.

If it looks to good to be true....

70-200mm VR came down in price from $1800 a year ago (when many people were buying) to approximately $1500, give or take. It is a classic range for a VR and a very usefull range to begin with. It can be "everyone's" lens, but the price is driven by compatition. Canon charges quite a lot for their version as well.

The store's margin is not as large as many think. I would guess they make 10-15% on the lens, so there are no big variations downward (only upward like Ritz who is stuck on $1800 or so).

bought from adorama
$ 1599.95 - $150( factory rebate) - $235(price match from AMEX)
= $ 1214.95

i used the AMEX best value programe serveral time for buying lenses already, all you need to do is find a magazine ad. that has lower price (super easy, you can find all kind of crazy prices in it, they usually ignore rebate) and fax it to them, $250 max, and $1000 for one year, but it needs to be gold card though, i also learned that from this web site =)

Wait... I do have AMEX. But it's the Platinum Cash Rebate card applied through Costco. Is price match available on this card too?

sorry, not for the costco or blue. i think the rule is you need to pay annual fee to get the benefit. this is my wife card for 7 years, at some point we actually thought about cancelling it, because no any other card need fee. but after i found out the programe, the money i claimed back are way over the $100 we paid for the card, i paid $1200 for 70-200VR, $350 for 35-70 2.8, and $900 for my sony PC120 camcorder.... although i need to make sure i won't buy thing more than i need to .....

(i wish i knew this thing when i paid $1800 for my D100 - it has a two month time limited)

The 80-200 AFD is $799. at B&H after a $100. rebate. (Also a good lens BTW)

It's a relatively easy mistake to make, so don't go into too deep a depression.
Best Regards,
Dave
