Ben,
Although I do not have the experience of many of the people here I thought I could also offer my opinion.
I too was in a very similar position a few weeks ago. I needed to replace all my SLR gear after a rather nasty divorce, and my first thought was replace with another SLR.
However after much consideration and research I finally decieded on the Canon Pro90 digital.
I must say that I could not be happier!! I really enjoy the freedom that digital photography offers me. Being able to take a bunch of experimental photos and immediatly see the result is amazing!!
The only drawback I have experienced so far is that the pro90 is not as fast a shooter as the Canon 10S I had previously... but I am learning to adapt quite well.
It also takes some getting used to a camera that "boots up" but so far it has not been a problem.
Some of the deciding factors for me on the Canon Pro90 are:
10X Image Stablized Zoom Lens (that really works!)
The ability to mount proper lens filters like a UV ot Polorizer
SLR like feel of the body
A flash hot shoe that it TTL metered (not all are, to my surprise)
The ability to carry all my gear in a small fanny pack camera bag for hiking.
I hope that my experience has assisted you in some way.

Im thinking about buying a digital camera, but i have no idea what
to get i really like the oly 2100 the zoom is key, but i just feel
bad about spending so much money on one thing. but at the same time
if im gonna get a camera it better be a good one, i dont want a
card board box with a lens on it. if anyone can think of a good
camera, maybe i could get a camera and also puchase a telescopic
lens for it...i dont know. any advise is appreciated.
