I had the opportunity 'to play' with the S1 in a shop. I found the movement of the Zoom difficult to control - sloppy - either far too fast - zooming right out - or stopping half way - guess it needs getting used to. In comparison I found the Zoom movement on the Olympus to be very precise and easy to control. Has anybody else experienced these same issues?

Any other issues to specifically look for and against in each Camera? Camments would be welcomed. I appreciate the S1 has IS and perhaps a better movie mode - but any other significant differences?

Yes, the zoom on the S1 is a bit touchy to control accurately. If you wish to zoom slowly, you only need to use very slight pressure on the zoom control, and then it will zoom quite slowly and very smoothly. It does take some getting used to.

The HUGE difference IS the image stabilization. But, I think it has blessings and curses. Obviously, low light and hand held performance is tremendous. But, I think compared to the Olympus the images are soft. Now, I like the snap that comes out of Olympus cameras, but it isn't anything I can't fix up how I like it with Photoshop. Thus, in my opinion, the Canon wins. The only other thing I really liked about the Olympus is the hot-shoe - until I saw the prices of their flashes.

Canon 1s IS firmware upgrade should take care also of the fast zoom.

Due to the zoom capability (10x), you'll need fast 0-10x zoom speed. Canon 1S gives you 2 ways of control. 1) All the way to the max zoom - within 1 second and 2) slower control for anything in between. And when digital zoom is enabled, the zoom stops at 10x and you'll have to stop and zoom again to get the digital zoom function working. I suppose this is done deliberately.

Image stabilizer is sort of a must at 10x zoom, without tripod. it helps a lot especially continually shooting for 30-40 pictures.
