Just a side comment here...

A feature of Windows XP that I'd never used before...

I had made some changes to my PC, and somehow things got messed
up, and suddenly my old reliable PC was acting very strange. And
then I found that Capture 1 couldn't even launch without crashing.

This would have been a ton of work to reload in the OS, and all
the applications, et cetera.

But I decided to give the System Restore application (in Accessories,
System Tools) a try. Resting the system back to before I made the
changes.

Whew ... a miracle. My old reliable PC is back, and I can just enjoy
the weekend, rather than reloading in the OS and everything else.

Great tool ... as far as I can see.

Also works great at restoring viruses. for that reason be careful

Thats why you turn off System Restore before proceeding with any virus removal removal procedures... ; )

Yeah - and don't forget (to original poster) if you get a Virus/Trojan locked into your Restores and HAVE to turn off Restore (or you cannot get your anti-virus prog to unlock it to kill) - THEN you lose ALL your previous Restores !!!!
I've just had three weeks HELL with this

like PS CS or C1, or others. Just wondering if they were affected.
That's a darn good question. To be frank, I am suddenly having
trouble with C1, and I never have had any problem with it before.
But it could be something else. In summary, 2 days later, I am not
sure what's going on anymore. Things were fine right after the
restore, C1 worked great again, but now I don't know.

The restore point I went back to was a date when things were fine,
before I added in SP1, and some other patches, but ... I don't
know.

This space reserved for a clever phrase, as soon as I find one that
hasn't already been taken.

Were you asking the question of FF about the Virus situation ?

If so, I can tell you I've been through a Hell-hole period this last couple of months or so with Virus infecton, cleared then recurring, and I've done a full 'Restore' shut-off at least three times. Incidentally, sometimes that alone clears it as the problem thing is locked into 'Restore' and when that's shut down you lose all points, but also with it the cussed Virus! Blessing in disguise.

But as far as PS is concerned (ver7 on this one) it hasn't made any difference as you are not actually disturbing that (at least usually) so it carries on irregardless of the Restore shut-down then start-up again.

Not too sure about CS though. That works in a very odd way as to the Activation ...and did you know there is a time-limit set within the computer to the serial registered and THAT can crop up from early versions. How the Restore shut-down affects any of these new kind of progs I don't know .. and I don't think it is likely to be apparent at all until some later date way after the trouble spot. So it IS still a case of 'beware' or at least 'be aware' of things that may come. After all, the Register is affected and that's where it all is.

Oops !! that could well be a source of problem to you. Adding SP1 adds umpteen things into the Register and a lot of changes are made , some quite minor and for good, others being what good old Bill Gates gang think good. But as I said in my message above, changes in the Register can be anywhere, and one or two CAN I'm sure have possible effects on varioius cryptic program data , particularly cryptic but essential IN ORIGINAL FORM to these newer Activation type things we now have to put up with.
