Any suggestions on filters? Main use will be for landscapes.

Taking this lens and my 50 1.8 to Disney later this yr.

Thanks.

The filters-as-protection issue has been discussed/argued to death on this and other forums. I'm with those who feel that any piece of glass placed in front of the lens is likely to degrade performance, at least under some conditions. The only filter I would consider would be a polarizer, which is used for a specific artistic purpose, e.g. darkening the sky. Otherwise, keep the filters off and keep the hood on--and save money in the process.

I like to keep a UV filter on every lens I own for protection. all of them are dirt cheap, stuff like sunpak, cokin, calumet house brand, and quantaray.

none of them do anything to the images, heck the cheapest filter I have is on my most expensive lens, $20 sunpak filter on $1,700 lens. No problems with image quality.

The only reason I would spend any real money on good filters, would be for somthing like a circle polarizer.

just my $0.02 tho, everyones gonna have their opinion.

...when you first put the filter on, put a very thin, clean piece of paper on the lens and be very careful when screwing the filter in. The front element sticks out a bit and the filter glass gets scary close to the front element. I haven't had a filter hit the element yet, but you'll see what I mean if you get the 17-40. I'm scared an especially thick filter could hit the glass.

'A Hard Day's Night' was the 3rd best 'Marx Brothers' movie ever made.

Guido,

Which B + W polarizer do you use? There are a variety of types i.e. slim, extrawide etc.

thx,

jack

Mainly for bright sunny days with high contrast(Disney).

I thought a Cir Pol. or a Grad ND filter would help with these shots? What does everyone use with this lens and these types of shots?

I have this lens on the way. I'm getting the B+W 77mm Circular Polarizer (MRC) Multi-Resistant Coating Glass Filter Slim for it. Heading out to the Grand Canyon area in September. Also, here in Florida, I'm around areas where I can take pictures of fish. Should be useful for that as well.
Does anyone know what filter to use for ocean scenes?

the front element design on the 17-40 is begging for a filter. Even though the 17-40 is internal focusing, the front section still moves in and out somewhat.

For complete water resistance and dust prevention, I use a UV filter on it.
Just make sure you use a multicoated one that does not degrade performance.

But the weather is good where I shoot! Most of my other lenses don't even have weather sealing...should I never use them? ;))

To complete the weather sealing, you'll need to attach a front
filter to this lens. Check your manual...

If your lens does not need a filter for sealing, you can do whatever you feel about front element protection. All I am saying is that a 17-40L will benefit from a front filter to seal the front end. Even if you have good weather where you shoot, dusts are present almost in all shooting situations.

The most hazardous environment I have ever encountered is when shooting a group of people using miter saws. I was lucky to shoot with a 1D and a 70-200mm f/2.8L IS, and I didn’t worry when I saw saw dust had piled on my equipment.

If you are going to put something infront of a nice piece of lens it had better not take away from the image.

I decided to go with the many who have never had a problem going 'naked' and did the same. I hope I'm not cursing myself! ;-0

You didn't ask for any camera recommendations but here is one anyway! I just got back from hiking all over Mt. Mitake, outside Tokyo, with my 10D, 17-40, and 50/f1.8 (didn't use) and I can't imagine hauling my 10D bag all over the rides @ Disneyland.

Consider taking a less substantial camera. Especially if you have small kids to keep track of. You will enjoy yourself more and so what if the shots aren't the best. (Oohh, I said it!) They are only reminders of what you did, your memories of the fun times should be better anyway.

I took this on July 2nd using a Tiffen polarizer on my 17-40. not the best brand polarizer, but did a good job of what I wanted it for.

I went out and bought a UV/protection filter a few days after getting my 17-40, and it's been sitting in it's case ever since. Many people have made many valid points for why not to use a filter, but few have made strong cases on why to use one. If something is going to come at your lens and potentially cause damage, it's may break the UV (or whatever filter is on the lens) filter and potentially cause even more harm with the additional broken glass.

the only other filters, I have bought are two ND filters for some waterfalls I plan to shoot. Either way, that UV will continue to stay in it's box.
