Decided to shot something a bit different today and decided to stalk a couple of butterflies visiting the garden. May be the last shots I post for a couple of weeks as I am off on holidays to Northwestern Ontario (Rainy River specifically).

300D, Sigma 105mm f2.8ex macro lens, Canon 420ex speedlight with lumiquest soft-box.

i'm getting my tamron 90 macro soon. i see that most of the macro photos are shot with flash and the lumiquest soft-box.

since i have the sigma 500 dg super: does the stofen omnibounce give the same effect as the soft-box does?

kind regards,
gpichler

I do not own a stofen omnibounce so I cannot really say, but I pretty confident that it does not give the same effect as a softbox. I think Micheal Soo has both the stofen omnibounce and a softbox so he may be able to answer this question better than I would.

Beautiful pics, Rich. The composition of these is superb.

I've seen a total of 1 (one) butterfly since I've owned my camera. You must live in an aviarium! :)

What kind of flowers are those in the background? All your beasties seem to love them.

I have both the StoFen omni-bounce and the Lumiquest SoftBox. I find that, for many subjects, the Stofen is just fine at softening the shadows. It does NOT soften them as much as the Softbox... but very often, I end up using BOTH in combination to get extremely soft shadows....

You end up getting very soft shadows that way...

The softening of shadows comes from the dispersion of light. A wide area light creates softer shadows than a narrow beam. For this reason ALONE, one can see that the physics are in favour of the Softbox, as it dpsperses the light over a much larger area.

This is not to say that the Stofen doesn't do a good job. It does disperse light quite well...

That's with the stofen alone... note the shadows for this tiny little guy (he was maybe 3/4 of an inch long. Even at close distances and with his limbs so close to the ground, you get some soft shadows. Would they have been softer with the SoftBox? Likely... Is it 'okay' with the StoFen? I think so.

But if you look at his eye-reflections in the full-sized version

http://www.arcdiv.com/images/canon-07202004/CRW_1796-spider6-cr.jpg

you can see the little reflections of the flash in the classic square StoFen shape. I wonder how it would have looked with the softbox (bigger glare? No idea).

Beautiful! As usual. That softbox really gives a nice effect to the lighting on the pictures. Which Lumiquest softbox are you using and will it fit on the 550 EX? I've looked at the mini and the one that says it fits the 550...it looks like a much bigger unit. Thanks for any info.
