Boy, oh boy, is this combo ever picky about the shooting distance (about 13in), and man, does it ever have a shallow DOF! All handheld, but it was very tough doing so, believe me! All converted to tiff from raw in NC4, then reduced/final sharpening & saved as jpg in PS7. Comments?

Great shots for a lens that was never meant to do that!

Here is something you will never read in these forums:

"I blew my 10:1 macro shot because even with the lens wide open I still had a distracting background!"

Neil

Those first two shots are amazing! I really want this lens (and I'm about to buy a 500D, so it's good to see that they work together even if it's tricky).

Can I ask a slightly OT question of you? I was talking to the local camera store and they advised against using this lens on the D70 due to the strain on the mount.

He said a tripod was fine if I used the lens mount, but then what is the point of VR?

Do you use the lens handheld on the D70? and how do you carry the setup around with you?

Thanks!

I have a lot to learn about macro myself.

As well as the 500D in fact.

Strain on the lens mount could become a problem if you carry around the camera without supporting the lens. Since the lens weighs more than the camera, you should switch to seciring the 70-200 in your hands first and foremost when it's attached, rather than dangling the lens from the camera like you would when using a lighter lens. Make sense?

I have not noticed a problem in the 3 months that I've had this combo, but I'm careful to use only the lens tripod mount, and I support the lens weight by putting my hand over the lens cap when carrying around handheld.

I seriously doubt you'll have a problem with the lens mount if you treat it with care.

First of all, thanx for looking/commenting. While I do "try" to exercise some caution while walking around with this lens mounted, by usually holding most of it's weight by the lens, I do sometimes forget I should be careful with all that weight hanging off it, esp with the 500D added, which is rather heavy in it's own right. So far, no problems. (knock wood)

Hey Steve,

I have used this combo too...and you are right about the focusing distance...I can see in the viewfinder the subject moving in and out of focus even with the slightest movement. I think it will work great if used on a tripod...cool shots by the way.

Very nice shots, Steve. I've done the same with the 80-400VR. It's a very low percentage proposition for me... :-)
