the "4.0mp" sticker on the bottom right as well as the tab with the main specs attached to the wrist strap hole weren't there (assuming they're supposed to be there)....did i get a used product? the image number did start with 1, and the settings (that i can remember from sd110 i had before) seemed to be the default. speaking of which, was the default flash mode red eye flash? can someone help me out? i ordered it online from beachcamera, if that would solve anything.
thanks

In my opinion you should exchange it if possible. It sounds like someone may have "tried" it out at some point. Beach camera seems to have very good ratings on pricegrabber, so I would call their custsomer service and see what they have to say. Good luck!

When you first powered on the camera, you should of got the screen telling you to set the date and time. Atleast that what happened in my S410 and my now S500. If you didn't get that, it's likely the camera has been used before or tested out.

thank you to you both so far for giving me your opinions. the camera did ask me for the date and time. but is this something that will happen after the battery has been taken out for a few weeks/months?

one thing i do find weird tho is that if there indeed was a previous owner, why he/she would bother taking the sticker off of the corner...because from what i remember from owning the sd110, it was stuck on there very well..and there's no mark left there at all.... still, since i paid $325 for it, (and seeing how beachcamera has "brand new from factory" in writing) i would like to make sure it is new. i guess an exchange would be the easiest thing to do..but if it's new, there's no need. that's why this thread was started. :P

You're welcome. There is a small rechargeable battery hidden inside the camera that retains time and date, among other things. If you leave the camera without the main battery installed, then the backup battery will deplete in a month or so.

I don't understand why anyone would take off the "4 megapixel" sticker...

hey, on all those camera reviews, they don't have the sticker...why is that? but because the sticker isn't there doesn't mean the tab that was on the wrist strap hole isn't there...or does it? sigh..am i being too paranoid?

The other thing you want to look at is the condition of the incuded accessories and software. If any of these appear to have been opened, then the odds are someone used the camera. If all the accessories and software appear untouched then you shouldn't worry about.

If the camera is taking pictures to your liking, then don't lose sleep over this minor issue. Go out and enjoy the camera...

the things that were suspicious were the battery and battery charger bags, which were sparsely dimpled as if poked at with a dull pencil or something...and i think there's a fingerprint on the prongs of the charger...which might be the tell-tale sign (could it be a canon employee's?). otherwise everything else was complete and sealed.
you're right tho, i shouldn't be bothered by it...i guess

My S500 came w/o a sticker and the little tag you speak of, but it didn't appear to be any signs that the camera has been used before. Maybe Canon has the S410/S500 manufactured in two different places, with one putting on the sticker and tag and the other doesnt'. I bought my S500 from my local Best Buy, and had bought a S410 from Dell.com, with the S410 having the sticker and the Best Buy one didn't.

My S410 (purchased about 2 weeks ago) did not come with a sticker or tag. I bought from Newegg.com and have no reason to believe it had previously been opened or used. The packaging was certainly all in from-factory condition.

Looking at my box packaging, the box photo doesn't show the sticker, either.

hm, that's interesting. very good to know that. i guess that's a possibility. can you tell me, how easy does it seem to you to take the sticker off, and you think it can be done easily without making any marks around it?
thanks for your insight.

check your camera's body serial number against the box's serial number.
Make sure they match.

On my S400, the 4.0MP sticker is there but I don't think there is a tab with spec on the wrist strap hole.

thank you all for your replies. it makes me feel better to hear others are getting the same thing. the box and the camera numbers do match, so i guess that's one less thing to worry about. and it seems like i don't need to worry too much about the sticker/tag either. i wonder why there'd be that inconsistency tho...oh well. thanks everyone very much.

I bought my S500 from Costco and it didn't come with the 5.0mp sticker on the lower right corner. I also saw new stock at Circuit City, and it didn't appear there either. Must be something that they are not including on the later releases.

When I purchased my camera from Costco Online, they gave me an extra battery, a Canon case, and a nice Canon Pack. Very nice. The omission of the battery life meter is neutralized by an extra battery. Now I shoot, and shoot, and shoot. I'm a shootin' fool. Stop me before I shoot again!

cool cool. thanks. amazing how much info is out there from people on forums.

i need to buy an extra battery. i hear of people buying from sterlingtek.com without problems. seems cheaper than batterybarn (1 big battery costs $20 or so i think, where at sterling you can buy 2 for greater power combined for about $18). i'll have to do that.
