A-85 is finally here...but is it accurate?

...kinda like the new iPod. :)
The News Release of the A85 is somewhat confusing...

"Canon has today announced the PowerShot A85 a replacement to the
entry-level PowerShot A70"

-Did Canon forget they produced an A75?

"The A85 remains a four megapixel"

-The A70/75 was 3.2mp.

The designation of A85 implies that it's a higher grade cam than an
A80...but 4mp on a 1/2.7 CCD is more of a downgrade from A80's 4mp
on a 1/1.8 CCD.

This can't possibly an actual news release from Canon, but some
elaborate hoax???

Canon Powershot G2 w/ a 420EX; G3, A80, and S400 owner

maybe if I only had that teeny tiny swivel screen which added nearly an additional inch of thickness to my keyboard?

It has disappeared from the shelves of my local CompUSA and Circuit City stores, not sure about Best Buy. CompUSA guy says in his experience whenever that happens, a replacement is on the way. So I would imagine replacement would contain the same 5 mp sensor as on the S500. So does that mean S400 will be the only Canon 4 mp model to contain the larger 1/1.8 sensor?

Interestingly enough, when I was at Best Buy this past Sunday. They had the A80 for 249.99. I had to do a triple take to make sure I was looking at the correct price. It was displayed adjacent to the A75....selling for 249.99.

The decrease in image quality from the small sensor supercedes all of the A85 positives.

A80 for $249. My guess it will bottom out at this price and be very hard to find. I don't see the A85 as much of an improvement over the A80.

Why not bump it up to a 5mp or greater camera? Why not slim it down a bit? Why not produce it in black or a gun metal gray aluminum body?

Oh please... don't tell me that without a swivel LCD you can compose a macro shot of a flower looking up into the bloom without lying on the floor... or a shot at hip level without getting on your knees... or down over the top of people's heads without a stepladder...

Obviously you've never used one. The swivel provides so much more
creativity and functionality. Once you have, you would never want
to go back.

I believe the A80 will be discontinued and replaced by an even better A95 5Mp, topping Canon's Powershot A range with tilt/swivel LCD.

A75, A85, A95

So you could class the A85 as the A80's cheap replacement.

We will be back to the same G3/G5 debate with many preferring the G3 because of less noise, likewise for S410/400 over S500. Why not basically leave the A80 unchanged, just make minor increments like the A75 over the A70 and then come out with a separate 5 megpixel called A95 or whatever?

I was thinking along similar lines: the A80 looks like becoming the next G3. Great camera superseeded by one with similar fature set, more MPs but highr noise, leading to a lot of fondness (and higher 2nd hand prices) for the older model....................?

This A85 is a TRUE JOKE.
Shame on you Canon.

Everyone was waiting for an A80 upgrade and here is an A75 upgrade and A80 downgrade at the same time.
Shame on you Canon!

and people who buy the A85 thinking they have a better camera than the A80(cause its newer) will be surprised that its just an A75 updated to 4MP.

I will wait for the A90 or whatever but still hang on to my A80 cause it ROCKS!!

The differences:
Type :
1/1.8" CCD (A80)
1/2.7” CCD (A85)
7.8 – 23.4 mm (35mm film equivalent: 38 – 114mm) (A80)
5.4 – 16.2 mm (35mm film equivalent: 35 – 105mm) (A85=better)
lens coverage is personal opinion not empircal fact....
Maximum f/number :
f/2.8 – f/4.9 (A80)
f/2.8 – f/4.8 (A85=better)
WOW 0.1 aperture advantage, wopee!
Construction :
6 elements in 5 groups (2 aspherical elements) (A80)
9 elements in 7 groups (1 aspherical element) (A85=better)
LESS is better in OPTICS - that why a prime lens will beat a zoom everytime for resolution and contrast.

You need to get some background in photography, not statistics!

Any reason why Canon can not put 5 MP in the new Canon A85. I still had the two old Canon A20 and S30, made in Japan and took nice pictures. Excep the expensive SLR as D10D, most of recently point and shoot camera as Pro1, S1, S60 were not very well made and some were assembled in China. What I suggest is to continue to use the whatever camera you have. I khew someone upgraded from G3 to G5 (4MP to 5MP) - not worth it. In facts, G3 had a overall better review than G5. even with lower MP. I you want to take a nice and detailed picture, go for a at least Rebel 300D or 10D or Nikon D70. Do not waist your money on cheap cameras. They do not work.
